FOFA Founder Arden Rothstein Honored

Please join FOFA in congratulating our president, Arden Rothstein, PhD, for being presented the 2017 Van Deren Coke prize in Fort Worth, Texas, by the national folk art group Los Amigos de Arte Popular (LADAP). LADAP established this award in 2004 to recognize " outstanding contributions to the preservation, education and promotion of Mexican folk art. " Coke, an avid collector of Mexican folk art, was a curator, teacher, author and photographer , and LADAP leader. Arden was honored for her life-long commitment to the artists of Oaxaca. She is the co-author, together with her daughter Anya, of a 2002 guide to the region's spectrum of folk arts - Mexican Folk Art from Oaxacan Artist Families . The book was updated and expanded in 2007 , the same year that Arden founded FOFA. We are grateful to LADAP for its vital support of FOFA over the past decade, and say "hats off to Arden!" for this public recognition!

Sixteen young artists who participated in a recent FOFA workshop on Oaxacan art history and culture recently organized their own exhibit, which opened at the Museo Estatal de Arte Popular de Oaxaca, MEAPO, on October 28th. The exhibition deals with the mythical Journey to Mictlán, and will run until mid-January.

According to the beliefs of the ancient Mexica, the souls of deceased people made a long journey in which they had to overcome nine obstacles in order to arrive at the guardians of the Underworld, Mictlantecutli and Mictlancihua, who would send the souls to eternal rest in one of the four houses of the underworld.
