Please note that there will be only one morning worship service, at 10:00 am, on Sunday, December 24th. Christmas Eve services, later that day, will be at 4:00, 6:00, 8:00 and 11:00 pm. Click here for full details.

Rector's Ramblings

Few things are as sacred in our liturgy as the Lord's Prayer. For the vast majority of us, it is the first prayer we learn as children. Every worship service we participate in includes the Lord's Prayer. The language of it reaches deep into our hearts and souls, without much conscious effort.  I have been with Alzheimer's patients who don't speak or communicate, and yet still find the words of the Lord's Prayer spilling out over their lips as we pray together. In my last parish, despite the modern prayers the teenagers wrote for their monthly liturgy, they insisted in the "old" language version of the Lord's Prayer. They simply couldn't bear to hear or speak the "new" version.

I imagine most Christians have similarly strong feelings about and experiences of the Lord's Prayer. For this reason, the Pope's suggestion that a rewording of the Lord's Prayer was in order got some attention this past week. Although that may (and did) sound shocking to some, the issue the Pope raises is certainly not a new one. His biggest concern is around the way we pray to God about temptation. We've all learned the version that prays that God would not, "lead us into temptation," and yet the Pope suggests that's not the best interpretation of the words Jesus said.

Worship

Lessons and Carols

Make plans to join us on Sunday, December 17th for our annual Lessons and Carols worship services. The 9:15 and 11:15 Liturgies will offer a grand variety of music including our Adult Choir, Christ Church Trebles, X Choir, and violin, oboe, English horn, trumpet, and organ.

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day WorshipChristmasWorshipTimes

Plan to join us for one of our Christmas Eve services as we celebrate the birth of Jesus. Because the church is usually filled to overflowing, if you would be comfortable sitting in the parish hall, please feel free to go there. Holy Communion will be served in the parish hall. Please know that if you plan to sit in the church, ushers will not allow seats to be saved. In order to be hospitable to all our guests, seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Please plan to arrive early accordingly.

Christmas Day worship will take place at 10:30 am at St. Ignatius.

Read the Entire Bible in One Year
Me? Read Through the Bible in a Year?

If you've wanted to read through the Bible but thought it an impossible goal, here's your opportunity to succeed! If the Bible seems confusing or you have questions about life, God has the answers!

The One Year Bible , New International Version (NIV), is divided into 365 days with each day having an Old Testament, New Testament, Psalms and Proverbs reading. Start January 1 and with just 10-15 minutes a day you'll discover how enjoyable reading the Bible can be, get answers to your questions and feel good at your accomplishment. Even if you have a Bible, this one is laid out perfectly so you don't get lost or behind.

We'll meet in early January for a brief overview of the Bible to put people and places in context for what you'll be reading. The One Year Bible is available in the church office for $15. For questions, contact Sharon at [email protected] or 912-638-8683. Don't let 2018 go by without reading the greatest story ever told!

ECW Tour of Homes Team Update!
by Beth Smith

I joined Christ Church eleven years ago and knew a handful of people. I quickly volunteered to work on the Tour of Homes being a docent at homes, a Co-Chair of a home and then on to Chair the entire TOH - twice now! Through this glorious event, I have met and engaged with most people in our church. I thank my good Lord for giving to me a church family and I give great credit to The Tour of Homes for this priceless treasure. I encourage you to become part of our team and get to know all these wonderful people. We've been hosting this event for 65 years - and it's still providing lots of hope to those in our community less fortunate than we are. The people currently on the TOH committee are generous, welcoming, and FUN! You will receive great rewards when you become part of the team that grants $60,000, $70,000, or more, to our local charities primarily benefiting women and children.

I encourage you to join us in any way you can! Recently, Charlotte, our very wonderful team of volunteers, and I sent out letters to all of you providing opportunities to become Volunteers and/or Benefactors. I am proud to announce that as of date we have received 16 Benefactor checks and 33 Volunteer Cards. As we told you last week, we have 4 houses on Sea Island/Ocean Forest, 4 houses on St. Simons and two new historical sights - Harrington School House and the Tabby Slave Cabins. Again Musgrove Retreat and Conference Center has agreed to both be on the Tour and to host our Celebration Party the next night, March 18.

So when you get a chance this busy Christmas season, please prayerfully consider the ECW's Tour of Homes' team! You may send in the cards provided, or contact one of us. I encourage you to check out our website: christchurchtourofhomes.org, and find us on facebook and instagram pages.

The Perfect Gifts from the ECW
Looking for a special gift? How about a  Christ Church commemorative tin  filled with either delicious cheddar cheese wafers or Key lime cookies? They make the perfect Christmas gift or anytime gift, and are only $15 per tin! The ECW has a fresh supply of each available now in the church office. Beautiful Christ Church cookbooks are also available for $20 each.

ECW Scholarships
In this season of Thanksgiving and remembrance, don't forget that the ECW scholarship fund is a great way to give thanks or memorialize someone special and still pass the gift on into the future. The scholarship fund is growing and you can be a part of it by making a donation as a expression of thanks or as a memorial. Some young person in the future will benefit from your generosity and will thank you for it. Call Jane Watson, 912-638-7285 , for more information.

Outreach

Christmas Food Baskets

Our annual collection of food for  Christmas food baskets for needy families in our community continues through December 19. Bring non-perishable food items for Christmas dinners to either church or the parish hall. You may also donate monetary gifts. Please mark checks for Christmas baskets.  On December 20 volunteers are needed from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm to  help assemble and distribute the Christmas baskets.   Contact:  Jeannie Wade 912-638-6462 or [email protected].

Parents' Day Out - Friday, December 22nd

Christ Church is offering a Parents' Day Out on Friday, Dec. 22nd, from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm, so parents of children 12 and under have an opportunity for last minute Christmas errands. Parents may spend time with their children at the church during this event as well. The day will include lunch, snacks, games, and more! Please contact Kathleen Turner at [email protected] or call the church office at 912-638-8683, as soon as possible, to sign up your children for this event. We need to know how many children to expect!

Christmas at Sea
We live in a seaport district and Christ Church actively collaborates with the local International Seafarers Center, which ministers to seafarers from all over the planet. Most of us are blessed with family and friends during the holidays, but Christmas can be a lonely time for seafarers. Every year during the season of Christmas, the International Seafarers' Center spreads the love of Christ through their Christmas at Sea program. About 1500 seafarers travel through the port of Brunswick from Thanksgiving to January 7th and the Center hopes to give every seafarer a Christmas present.

If you'd like to be part of this ministry, it's as easy as filling a shoebox with 12 - 15 item from the list found here, wrapping the box in holiday paper and bringing it to either the church office in the Parish Hall, or to the International Seafarers Center, at 307 Newcastle Street in Brunswick.
Help Needed with Annual SGHS Bridge Run

For several years,  Christ Church has fielded a team for the SGHS Bridge Run. This year's run is February 17, 2018,  and we need someone to captain the CCF team and organize our participation. You don't have to be a runner, just someone with organizational skills. Contact: Sharon Joy at  [email protected]  or 912-638-8683.

Vestry Nominations
Nominations are open for the 2018 vestry election. This year's nominating committee is comprised of the outgoing vestry members: Nancy Stoddard, Susan Shipman, Gene Rackley, Scott McQuade and two previous senior wardens of the parish: Clif Jones and Ed Turner. Along with Fr. Tom, these six individuals will put together the slate of nominees for election at the annual meeting on January 28, 2018. Nominations may be made to any member of the committee between now and December 23rd.

St. Ignatius Organ Finds New Home
With space at a premium at St. Ignatius Chapel, the hard decision to find a new home for the reed organ came to fruition. My staunch promise was to find a home for the instrument where it would be cared for, appreciated, and played. Reed organs have a unique sound, but perhaps not the best sound that enhances congregational singing.

Thanks to the help of Assist Organist and Choirmaster, George Ingram, our organ is in the caring hands of a family in Warrington, North Carolina, a beautiful historic town close to the Virginia border.

Library Volunteer Needed
Fr. Tom is looking for a volunteer to help catalog and organize his library. The process involves using a piece of software (provided) and a smart phone (can be a personal phone or Fr. Tom's). The individual who helps must be comfortable with computers and smart phones; library experience is a plus, but not required. If you think you have the time and interest to help with this project, please contact Fr. Tom at  [email protected]  to discuss the particulars.

Ushers Needed
Can you volunteer to usher occasionally at weekly worship? Your service would provide vital assistance to both the congregation and the clergy. Please contact Sharon Joy at  [email protected]  or 912-638-8683 .

Revival at Honey Creek
On Saturday, January 20, 2018, the Diocese of Georgia will offer a revival based on Fearless Faith and Boundless Love. Join us for a day of renewal and to celebrate the life and legacy of a Saint in Georgia, Deaconess Anna Alexander. The revival worship will use the propers for Deaconess Anna Alexander of Georgia (1865-1947) and displays, handouts, and a video will tell the story of this saint of Georgia.

The day begins with a service at Good Shepherd, Pennick where Deaconess Anna Alexander served. At 1:00 pm, parishioners from all over the diocese of Georgia will gather under a large tent on the grounds of Honey Creek Retreat Center to hear the Most Rev. Michael Curry, Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, as he shares his message of love and renewal. Please save January 20th, as it will be a day to celebrate our faith together and to share it with others. For more information and to register online, click here

Because parking at Honey Creek is very limited, we have arranged for two buses to drive round trip from Christ Church to Honey Creek on the day of the revival. The buses leave Christ Church at 10:00 am and depart Honeycreek at 3:00 pm. The cost per person is $28. You may pay for a bus seat by check made out to Christ Church, Frederica. Write "Bus" in the memo line. Mail checks to the church office or put them in the offering plate.

Music for the Revival

Some of you have heard Trina Mead and Music Director Kathleen Turner offer a piece of music based on Mark 28:19 and John 21:17. The piece is entitled "Go" by Leon Patella and was shared in services at Christ Church in September and again at our community Thanksgiving Service in November. They will be performing this song again at the Fearless Faith, Boundless Love Revival on January 20th.

The two other musical ensembles performing for the Revival are the Albany State University Choir and the Savannah Children's Choir. The Revival promises to be a spirit-filled Prayer Service - one that will foster a new and deeper love of Jesus Christ in all who are present. Please make plans to attend!

Enneagram Workshop
On January 26 - 27, Christ Church, Frederica presents the Rev. Dr. Paul Hanneman's introduction to the Enneagram. Join Dr. Hanneman for this workshop as he explores this ancient spiritual tool... the wisdom of the Fourth Century Desert Fathers, the first Christian monastics...deep, universal and life-changing. The Enneagram is about people - how we are the same, how we are different, what makes us tick and how we get in our own way. It describes nine fundamental personality styles. It helps explain why we behave the way we do. It offers specific directions for personal growth.

Schedule:
Friday January 26, 2018 - 7:00-9:00 p.m.
Dynamics of the Nine Personality Types, Ego Structure, Soul
Saturday, January 27, 2017 - 9:00-11:30 a.m.
You're NOT Your Personality"
(Light lunch served in Fellowship Hall.)
1:00-4:00 p.m.

Advance registration is required and registration forms can be found in the church office or downloaded here. The cost for the workshop is $40. Make checks to Christ Church, Frederica with Enneagram Workshop in the memo line. Contact: Billie Sargent at [email protected].

An Interfaith Journey to the Holy Lands: Relationship, Understanding, and Community Harmony

Join Rabbi Rachel Bregman, Rev. Alan Dyer, and Rev. Tom Purdy as they lead an interfaith journey to the Holy Land with Medji Tours in June 2019. This once in a lifetime trip aims to build relationships across cultural and religious lines in our community by exploring together the shared roots of our traditions in Israel and Jordan. Additionally, this interfaith journey hopes to begin a longer-term process of continuing to form relationships, deepen understanding, and build community across other faith organizations in Glynn County, Georgia upon our return. This trip is open to any and all who would like to participate in this holy work. For more information, click here.
