Surprise!  "Burnt Matchstick" is Now Illuminated

For a number of reasons, the original rules for works displayed in the Sculpture Exhibition in Newport Beach Civic Center Park included that they could not require illumination.  In fact, the Phase II sculpture "Prime Commonality," by Luke Crawley and Quincy Owens--trio of towers sited on the north end of the park along Avocado Avenue, always had interior lighting in prior installations elsewhere, but not here.  Fast forward to the October 28, 2017 opening of Phase III, and the disappointment by the public and, especially, Newport Beach City Council members, that Karl Unnasch's "Burnt Matchstick" would not be illuminated was palpable (images of the work in its lighted state were among those reviewed in advance of its selection).  The Council launched into action and six weeks later, the artist returned and worked with City staff to bring it to light.  "Burnt Matchstick," which, at 40 feet, is the tallest of the 29 sculptures exhibited to date, remains on view through fall 2019.  Read more about all the sculptures now on display here.
