San Francisco Giants
San Francisco Giants club senior vice president and general manager
Bobby Evans
announced last week the club's player development staff for the 2018 season.
"We are adding more resources, including coaches, medical staff, sports science and analytical support to our player development team to put our minor league players in the best possible position to succeed at all levels and ultimately help us win at the Major League level," said Evans. "Under David Bell's leadership we are excited about this direction. David's done a tremendous job in a short amount of time building a strong and committed player development staff. The
Oakland A's
acquired outfielder Stephen Piscotty from the St. Louis Cardinals for infielder Yairo Muñoz and minor league infielder Max Schrock, the club announced last week.
Piscotty batted .235 with nine home runs and 39 RBI in 107 games with St. Louis last year. He added 52 walks for a .342 on-base percentage in a season interrupted by two stints on the disabled list with a strained hamstring and strained groin. The 26-year-old right-handed hitter appeared exclusively in right field on defense in 2017. Piscotty has 260 career games in right field, 55 in left field, 12 at first base and 11 in center field. The San Jose Earthquakes have signed 15-year-old defender Jacob Akanyirige to a Homegrown Player contract. Akanyirige becomes the youngest-ever signing by the Earthquakes, the third-youngest player currently in MLS (Gianluca Busio - SKC, George Bello - ATL) and the eighth-youngest to ever sign a pro contract in league history. "Jacob has shown an incredible amount of potential at such a young age," said Earthquakes general manager Jesse Fioranelli. "We challenged him to play above his age this year and were impressed by his maturity and technical abilities. We are confident he will continue to develop with regular First Team training exposure." Tariq Bracy
Milpitas
-- Senior -- Football
|
Tariq Bracy, the Milpitas Trojans running back, was on a mission when his team traveled to Campolindo-Moraga for the CIF 4-A Northern Regional playoff game on Dec. 9. Since he and his twin brother, Tyree -- the team's quarterback -- have been at the varsity level, Milpitas have gone 0-3 in Central Coast Section championship games and 0-2 in regional playoff games. The latter included a 27-24 defeat in Moraga to close the 2015 season. So Bracy's mission was simple: don't be denied. And he wasn't. Tariq rushed 36 times for 311 yards and four touchdowns as Milpitas won 52-38 to advance to the CIF 4-A State Bowl Championship against Southwest-El Centro on Dec. 16. It was an especially good week for Bracy as he also officially committed to Notre Dame. Bracy also plays cornerback on defense, a position he may be more likely to play for the Fighting Irish. Dr. Russell Ahn
Director of UC's Martial Arts Program
Interview by Yafei Liang
Q: How long have you been practicing Taekwondo?
A: I have practiced for about 42 years, since I was in elementary school.
Q: How did you decide to teach at UC Berkeley?
A: It was 15 years ago when I finished my Ph.D. in linguistics and moved here from Hawaii. I thought I would stay for just a year but I later found great opportunities to teach at Cal because there are so many intelligent students who wanted to learn Martial Arts. I became a full-time faculty member in 2003.
Q: What kind of Taekwondo events have you attended and what position are you currently serving on?
A: I have organized UC Berkeley Taekwondo tournaments and many other local tournaments since 2003. I am now serving on the board of USA Taekwondo, the national organization of the United States, and I am the president of U.S. National Collegiate Taekwondo Association. We hosted the 42nd National Collegiate Taekwondo Championships at San Diego in April at UC San Diego. I have also participated in international championship. For example, in June I served as Technical Delegate to the International University Sports Federation at the Taipei Summer Universiade Taekwondo Championship, in charge of the overall championship, including the official results.

|
Q: As the birthplace of Taekwondo and Judo in the U.S., how did UC Berkeley contribute to the development of Taekwondo?
A: UC Berkeley has the full-time faculty member, Dr. Ken Min, who founded the University of California Martial Arts Program (UCMAP), the National Collegiate Taekwondo Association (NCTA) and the United States Taekwondo Union (USTU), which assisted in the development of Taekwondo in the U.S. Dr. Min worked hard to distinguish Taekwondo from Karate and Judo, which are well-known martial arts but have totally different rules from Taekwondo. Since the U.S. is such a huge country, the USTU brings delegates from each state together and contributes in making a set of consistent Taekwondo rules.
Q: Does UC Berkeley have its own professional Taekwondo team?
A: Yes, we have a Cal Taekwondo team, which was founded in 1970. We have won 37 out of 42 National Championship. We are an unbeatable champion! We have a room for Taekwondo trophies we have won. The team recruitment process is similar to other sports, such as football. We evaluate students' technical level and observe their performance in local competitions. Every fall semester we have team trials several times. Our students are taking part in international championships and they are representing the country.
|
The Cal Taekwondo Team defended the championship title at the 42nd National Collegiate Taekwondo Championships at the University of California, San Diego, on April 1-2, 2017.
|
Q: Do you tailor Taekwondo to the needs of Cal students?
A: I teach different groups of students, ranging from 3-year-old to adults. Students at Cal are really intelligent and I don't want them to feel bored. I demonstrate techniques and also introduce the philosophical background of Taekwondo. I also teach them how to practice Taekwondo beyond the martial art room, especially how to respect others.
Q: What is the difficulty faced by Taekwondo today?
A: Martial arts come and go. Taekwondo is now much more popular among young kids because it's introduced in private institution and that's where the money comes from. What we need to do is find more balance among the population and make it not just limited to kids. To do this, we need to change the curriculums and come up with different versions of Taekwondo which cater to the needs of adults.
Q: What distinguishes Taekwondo from other sports?
A: Our competition rules are wildly different and Taekwondo also focuses on the development of Asian philosophy. It educates people how to discipline ourselves, how to be confident, and how to respect others. Taekwondo also regards safety to be a really important element during practice.
Q: What would you do if you faced a robber?
A: If he wants my wallet, I will give it to him. There is no gain in fighting as no one would be the winner. If you kick and punch, you end up in the same position.
Q: What do you think is the importance of our belts?
A: Belts represent a ranking system. It cultivates learners' character and symbolizes achievement for young kids. It also indicates the responsibilities people who practice Taekwondo should take.
Q: Do you think Taekwondo is a blend of culture?
A: Yes. The spirit of Taekwondo derived from Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism. It educates learners to respect others. For example, it teaches us to accept things with both of our hands and to bow to each other. The gesture of bowing is to throw your neck forward to your opponent, which means that you trust your opponent and are willing to humble yourself.
Q: To make Taekwondo more suitable for competition and more attractive to audiences, some dangerous gestures are forbidden by rules. For example, athletes cannot attack their opponents below the belt. Do you think it's an improvement?
A: Competition rules have changed a lot. To reduce human interference in competitions, we use sensors on competitors to follow their movement. As long as they touch the sensors, they will get credit and this does not result in some genuine techniques because some movements can be captured by the computer while others cannot. It degenerates some techniques. But this also makes Taekwondo safer to practice. On the other hand, we have self-defense Taekwondo, which is different from the Olympic style and is more useful as it teaches students how to defend themselves in a fight on the street, rather than in competitions.
