NLLD Promotes Local Levee Projects to Federal Officials Visiting Our Region

NLLD Board President Cory Kief and Executive Director Dwayne Bourgeois participated in a December 5 tour of local levee and restoration projects with Corps of Engineers officials.

North Lafourche Conservation, Levee and Drainage District (NLLD) representatives recently had the opportunity to promote local levee and drainage projects to federal officials visiting our area.

On December 5,  Major General Richard Kaiser, Commander of the Mississippi Valley Division of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and leaders from the USACE New Orleans District office met with Lafourche and Terrebonne levee district officials and members of the Morganza Action Coalition to discuss the progress our community is making on coastal protection and restoration and our continued need for federal support.   The group toured local levee and coastal restoration projects in Lafourche and Terrebonne Parishes including segments of the Morganza to the Gulf Hurricane Protection System.

Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke
NLLD Board President Cory Kief, Commissioner Joni Tuck and Executive Director Dwayne Bourgeois participated in a roundtable discussion with U.S. Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke on December 2 in Thibodaux.

The event, coordinated by Senator Bill Cassidy and Congressman Garret Graves focused on the value of coastal restoration to American oil and gas production, which flourishes along our coast in the Central Gulf.

PROJECT UPDATES:
Clotilda Levee Upgrades and
Valentine Return Levee

Clotilda Levee Upgrades

The NLLD is working to resection and stabilize the Clotilda Levee, as well as bring the levee to a uniform elevation of six feet to strengthen flood protection. These Clotilda Levee upgrades are part of the Clotilda/Mathews Canal Levee Project on the eastern side of Bayou Lafourche around the Clotilda Farm, running along the Mathews Canal from the Gheens Shortcut Road to the Company Canal.  This project started in October and is about 30 percent complete.

Valentine Return Levee

Low Land Construction is working with the NLLD to build the Lockport to Larose Valentine Return Levee between Lockport and Larose on the west side of Bayou Lafourche in the community of Valentine.  The return levee will serve as a second layer of protection should the primary levee in this area fail.  It is also an important feature in providing a nine-foot elevation ring levee for all areas west of Bayou Lafourche between Lockport and Valentine.
