Myria Ross, Legal Secretary, joined NALS...The Association for Legal Professionals in 2017 at the suggestion of her employer. After searching different organizations, she was impressed that NALS was originally named the National Association of Legal Secretaries. Myria was moved that there is an organization full of secretaries. "This is Home!" was her first thought.
 

The history of foster care in the United States had beginnings elsewhere and at other times. Very early documentation of children being cared for in foster homes can actually be found in the Old Testament and in the Talmud. Caring for dependent children was established as a duty under law.


Leadership can mean many different things. To some, it is a state of being or a position, but to others, like the NALS Leadership Identification Committee ("LIC"), it is a demonstrable characteristic of actively guiding a group or an organization.

Using Foreign Words in Legal Writing Is Not Necessarily Your Pièce De Résistance

A good friend asked if I would write on the use of foreign words/languages in English writing, particularly whether we should include the foreign characters, accent marks, etc. in our legal writings.

I Am Eula Mae

While we were at the NALS Conference in Norfolk, Virginia, this past October, one of the things the Board brought up was a future campaign using the hashtag "#IAmEulaMae." This hit my heart straight on and I was overcome with emotion, excitement, and enthusiasm about the Board's vision using that hashtag.

In 1977, while driving back from a NALS meeting, NALS member, Marlene Oiler and her friend, Nancy Suvak talked about forming a chapter.  Marlene had the knowledge of how to organize and accomplish starting a chapter, while Nancy knew the community. 


I'm new in the legal field and proud to be legal secretary at a small law firm. There are only ten of us. We do not have a human resources office, only a paralegal that also serves as our office manager. I want so much to be the consummate professional and want to look professional too.

NALS Announces 2018-2019 Board of Directors

Voting results are in for the 2018-2019 NALS Board of Directors' election.  NALS extends a sincere congratulations to the newly elected officers!

Civil Litigation Introduced to NALS Networking and Specialty Sections Program

Back in June 2017, NALS launched the NALS Networking & Specialty  Sections. These sections are organized virtual communities to pose  questions and start conversations about specific topics. From office  management to specialty areas of law, these sections are here to  assist you in your career journey. The latest group addition is the  topic: Civil Litigation.

This section is joining Corporate Law, Criminal Law, Real Estate,  Family Law, and Civil Litigation along with two resource sections:  Courts In All 50 States and Federal Courts.

Each section, unless otherwise noted, is a small fee of $10.00 per  year to join.

Each NALS Networking & Specialty Section is: hosted by an  experienced NALS Member, given access to information, resources,  and knowledge specifically on that topic, designed to enhance  and create conversation among those who join, and a network of  experienced colleagues and friends who will become your very own
#NALSPALS!


Education Department Announces 'Study Hall' for Examinees

NALS Certification + Education Manager, Maria Easterly, has  gathered several resources for examinees! She has created an  online group for all examinees with resources from several sources  to freshen up on a few key topics that have been requested by  students, educators, and examinees. Board of Directors Releases the 'Safari Schedule' + Hotel Pricing for NALS Spring Legal Education Event

Mark your calendars for April 6-7, 2018! Adventure Tulsa is not your  typical continuing legal education experience. Please welcome Charniece Rollie from Kansas City, Missouri.  Charniece brings with her over 20 years in the legal industry and she is a member of the Ed On Demand Taskforce. 
 
Also, welcome Cathy Zackery, CLP from Kalamazoo, Michigan.  Cathy brings with her nearly 5 years in the legal industry and she serving as President of her local chapter and a member of the Manuals Taskforce.

Board Live Event Video!

In case you missed it, NALS Board of Directors, Tara Hughes, PP-SC, ACP, RP and Carl Morrison, PP-SC, RP, AACP hosted a live event on Facebook reminding everyone of a few things to look forward to in 2018.  

2018 Traveling Gavel Challenge

As mentioned in the Facebook Live Video above, NALS Board of Directors will be sending a USB gavel to various chapters who are willing to participate. This USB drive will be used for chapters to upload their photos from their chapter. These gavels will be sent around until NALS 67th Annual Conference in Mesa, Arizona (Phoenix)
