Greetings, HEC Supporter,
35 years ago, a foresighted and very devoted group of women and men came together to form the Hoosier Environmental Council!
Our founders' pioneering vision laid the foundation for legislative and legal victories as well as campaign wins that HEC has secured over our history -- successes that have protected vulnerable communities across Indiana, saved thousands of acres of wilderness, and strengthened safeguards for our air, lakes, and rivers.
Fittingly today, March 5th -- 3/5 -- we launch a year-long celebration to commemorate our 35 years of being Indiana's leading educator and advocate for the environment!
Help us celebrate our historic milestone in three ways...
1.) Give a $35 Gift to HEC During the Week of 3/5!
Whether you’re a long-time member or would like to become a member, join us in celebration of our 35th anniversary by supporting HEC with a
$35 gift during the week of 3/5
! And if you really want to honor HEC's 35 years, please join our Sustainability Club - and give a
gift of $35 per month
!
As our way of saying thanks, we’ll include a small, special 35th anniversary surprise along with your gift acknowledgment.
2.) Learn about the First of 35 Ways that HEC Has Made a Major Difference!
Over the course of the next twelve months, we'll be spotlighting 35 ways that HEC has made a major difference for the people, animals, and environment of Indiana. Here's our first of 35: Back at the time of our founding, the Hoosier National Forest was vulnerable to far-reaching clear-cutting and oil & gas drilling. Not sitting on our hands, HEC and our allies mobilized thousands of Hoosiers to push back against this highly controversial, anti-environmental plan, and succeeded in persuading then-Governor Bayh along with 11 of the 12 members of the Congressional delegation from Indiana to back the "
Conservationists’ Alternative Forest Plan," which was largely adopted by the U.S. Forest Service. It was a victory that, to this day, has preserved the integrity of this ~200,000 acre national treasure.
3.) Take Part in the Heart of What HEC has Done All Our 35 Years: Advocate!
This week marks the final full week of the 2018 legislative session -- and there remain a few ways that your advocacy efforts can make an impact. Help us push back against a potential resurrection of a bill that could devastate many of Indiana's lakes (see 3a), speak up for more sustainable transportation options in Central Indiana (see 3b), and amplify "the environmental voice" across Indiana (see 3c)!
