Roxbury Township Public Schools Strives to Go Green
Since 2016, the Roxbury Township Public Schools has been striving to become more sustainable and green in its policies and practices. The Board of Education and administration made the decision to pursue district sustainability and green initiatives by creating and approving half of dozen different policies outlining its position and efforts in 2017.  Click here  to view those approved policies.

We have also been continuously working toward becoming a Sustainable Jersey for Schools certified district and to have each of our seven schools become certified as well. Sustainable Jersey for Schools is a certification program for New Jersey public schools that want to go green, conserve resources and take steps to create a brighter future, one school at a time. Launched in fall 2014, they are a non-profit organization that provides tools, training and financial incentives to support and reward schools as they pursue sustainability programs.  Click here to read more about this program.

You might recall last spring, families, students, and community members were asked to complete our Communication Effectiveness Survey. This was all part of our effort to become Sustainable Jersey for Schools certified. The results were shared with the district administrators including the superintendent, principals, and supervisors at an administrative cabinet meeting in August. Click here to take a look at those results and be on the look out for future surveys!

As you've likely seen in past editions of this e-newsletter, Roxbury's Clean Communities is hard at work helping to beautify Roxbury Township. They're also helping Roxbury School's go green by  providing assemblies, information, and tips and tricks on how we all can do our part! Here are some holiday recycling tips to get you started:
  • Don't forget to recycle gift wrap this holiday season rather than put it in the trash. Gift wrap including tissue paper can be put in with mixed paper. The only exception is real foil wrap, which can be reused or put into the garbage.
  • Corrugated cartons, pre-holiday catalogs and gift boxes should also be recycled! If boxes are too large to fit into a curbside recycling bin, they should be flattened, folded, and stacked inside one cardboard box and placed next to the recycling container for pickup.

Dates Set for Roxbury's Kindergarten Registration for the Next School Year
Roxbury Township Public Schools, a K-12 school district preparing the children of today for tomorrow, has set its Kindergarten registration dates for the 2018/2019 school year. Children must be five years old on or before October 1, 2018 to participate.

Roxbury Township Public Schools offers a full-day kindergarten program designed to develop knowledge and skills in the physical, social, emotional, and cognitive areas. Our goal is to help children develop skills and strategies that will help them learn and establish a foundation for lifelong success in education. The program allows more time for students to address curriculum in depth and allows teachers to provide additional activities in learning.

To register for Kindergarten, parents must bring their child's original birth certificate, record of immunizations, and three proofs of residency at the time of registration. To access more details, visit www.roxbury.org/KindergartenRegistration .

Parents must make an appointment at their home school to register their child. Roxbury High School Holds Makerfair
Roxbury High School took their 'Hour of Code' to a whole new level last week. In an effort to expand the minds of students and get them interested in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math), the Roxbury High School Robotix team along with members from Roxbury's Gaelvision teamed up to hold a Makerfair in the Media Center at the high school with more than 400 students passing through throughout the week.

Leaders and members of the robotics team organized and sponsored this event with the support of Roxana Caivano, the media specialist at Roxbury High School and Gaelvision.

Lee Hayden, Roxbury High School robotics advisor and teacher explained the decision to hold an event like this, "We felt that the student body is generally unaware of all the technology activities, both curricular and extra-curricular, available to them at the high school and specifically within the fields of programming and robotics. This event gives them the chance to get interested."

Roxbury High School offers computer science courses, engineering courses, and robotics electives in addition to the Robotix club and Gaelvision. Click here to read more about the Makerfair.

Kinky Boots is the exhilarating Broadway musical that will lift your spirits to new high-heeled heights! Winner of six Tony Awards® including Best Musical, this inspirational story follows a struggling shoe factory owner who works to turn his business around with help from Lola, a fabulous entertainer in need of some sturdy stilettos. Together, this unlikely pair finds that they have more in common than they ever dreamed possible... providing that when you change your mind about someone, you can change your whole world.

Wicked... So much happened before Dorothy dropped in.  Wicked, the Broadway sensation, looks at what happened in the Land of Oz...but from a different angle. Long before Dorothy arrives, there is another girl, born with emerald-green skin--smart, fiery, misunderstood, and possessing an extraordinary talent. When she meets a bubbly blond who is exceptionally popular, their initial rivalry turns into the unlikeliest of friendships...until the world decides to call one "good," and the other one "wicked." With a thrilling score that includes the hits "Defying Gravity," "Popular" and "For Good," Wicked has been hailed by The New York Times as "the defining musical of the decade." Time Magazine cheers, "if every musical had the brain, the heart, and the courage of Wicked, Broadway really would be a magical place."

A Festive Front Yard Aims to Help Roxbury Social Services
You can thank Danny and Marianne D'Amico for the festive glow lighting up the night sky to the east of the Succasunna ShopRite Parking lot.

Janet Wald, director of Roxbury Social Services Department, sure does.

The radiance shining through the trees is coming from an elaborate Christmas display taking up most of the D'Amico's front yard. The couple is hoping those who come to their 23 Walker Ave. creation will spread the joy by leaving a few dollars or food items for Roxbury Social Services.

When Christmas was over, the D'Amicos paid a visit to the Social Services building and handed Wald more than $500 they'd collected from visitors. Outside his Christmas display on Thursday night, D'Amico said he hopes to do the same, or better, this year. Click here to read more about from Tap Into Roxbury.

Roxbury Family Uses Holiday Light Show as Fundraiser for Boy with Brain Tumor
A Roxbury family is inviting everyone to come see their home's holiday light show and, if they do, to donate money for a local boy battling a brain tumor.

Rob and Melissa Katz, of 56 Parkview Drive in Succasunna, are collecting the donations on behalf of Matt Adonis, a Roxbury 4th-grader who was found in September to have a brain tumor. There have been several other fundraisers for the youngster and an  online GoFundMe page on his behalf has collected about $18,000 in donations.

Katz, a former police officer who now drives a Roxbury school bus, is close to the Adonis family having coached Matt in ice hockey for about five years. "I've seen other people with light displays take donations and I thought, `What a great way to raise a few dollars,'" he said. "I might make a few hundred bucks for them." Click here to read more about this from Tap Into Roxbury.

Roxbury 7-Year-Old Picked as Arthritis Walk Honoree
A 7-year-old Succasunna girl with juvenile arthritis will be the "youth honoree" at the "Walk to Cure Arthritis" event next spring and she's asking people to donate money to help cure the disease.

The girl, Isabella Masullo, will be a big part of the Arthritis Foundation event taking place May 5 at Turtle Back Zoo in West Orange, said her mother, Connie Masullo. "Her name will be all over the flyers and website," she said.

Isabella, who attends Jefferson School, is trying to raise $5,000 in pledges before the walk through her  "Bella's Butterflies" online fundraising effort. Click here to read more about Isabella's story from Tap Into Roxbury.

Roxbury "Friends" Group Needs Help in Helping the Downtrodden
Bad luck, bad decisions, bad karma, bad economy. Whatever the reason, there are people in Roxbury living in the woods, sleeping in their cars, barely eating and otherwise not exactly living the American Dream, according to Kim Armstrong.

She's the treasurer of a non-profit organization called Friends of Roxbury Social Services. It's a group that, like the unfortunate people it helps, operates in the background of daily life in Roxbury. Its mission is to help Roxbury Social Services assist the less fortunate cope with the myriad challenges and problems that go hand-in-hand with poverty.

To be able to do its work, Friends of Roxbury Social Services relies largely on donations. It is currently  running a fundraiser on Facebook  and hoping people in Roxbury will donate a few dollars.

People interested in helping the organization can do so a number of ways. In addition to the  Facebook fundraiser,, the Friends of Roxbury Social Services has a way of accepting donations at its  website. Financial donations (checks payable to Friends of Roxbury Social Services) can also be sent to FRSS, 72 Eyland Ave., Succasunna, NJ 07876.

Those wishing to donate directly to Social Services can bring food and other goods to the Roxbury Social Services center at 72 Eyland Ave. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Social Services supported 6,107 people in 2016, according to the Friends group. Click here to read more about this groups efforts from Tap Into Roxbury.

The New Jersey Senate has passed a bill to dedicate $500,000 annually to protect Lake Hopatcong.  Sponsored by Sens. Anthony Bucco, Steven Oroho and Joe Pennacchio, the bill establishes "The Lake Hopatcong Fund," which would dedicate money every year to protect, preserve, restore maintain, manage and enhance New Jersey's largest freshwater lake.  The bill now heads to the state Assembly, where it will go to the floor Jan. 4.

S-2389 calls for a fund to be set up using fees from licenses required to operate power boats on nontidal waters. Currently the fee is $18 for a 48-month power vessel operator's license. Those fees currently are split between the state general fund and the Motor Vehicle Commission. If the bill is signed into law, those fees would be redirected to the newly created "Lake Hopatcong Fund." Click here to read more about this proposed law from the Daily Record.

Roxbury Students Invited to Mountain Bike Team
A recently formed interscholastic mountain biking team based in Randolph is inviting sixth-grade to 12th-grade Roxbury students to participate.

The team, called the Randolph Revolution, fields riders that compete in mountain bike races in the  New Jersey Interscholastic Cycling League (NJICL), a National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA) sanctioned, statewide mountain biking league for youths, said Jeremy Klopper, one of the coaches. The Randolph Revolutions is a "composite" team that includes riders from Randolph, Roxbury, Mine Hill, Dover and Victory Gardens.

Klopper said the team was established "to provide area youth an opportunity to meet new friends and ride the local trails." The riding season runs from October through late June. Click here to read more information about this opportunity from Tap Into Roxbury.
