Superintendent's Message
Dear Parents, Staff, Students, and Community Members,

With the coming of Winter Break, students and faculty continue to work hard in anticipation of this well-deserved hiatus from their normally busy routine. To begin the Winter Break students will be dismissed early on Friday, December 22 at 2:30 p.m. Winter Break  begins on December 25 and continues until January 5. The District Office will be closed from December 25 - January 1, and reopens from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 2. Classes and regular District Office hours resume on Monday, January 8.

Winter's arrival also signals the possibility of school closing or delayed opening due to inclement weather. The District has a process to inform parents about the likelihood of closing school so that they can make any necessary changes to their school attendance routines. Additional information about how the District will alert families to weather induced school closings is below.

Also, plans are being finalized for the One District/One Book shared reading experience. The book selected for this initiative is Mindset: The New Psychology for Success, by Carol Dweck. The District is planning several activities to accompany the reading of this book. Please mark your calendars for February 3 for a Village-wide event to be held at Roosevelt Middle School.  Dr. Ann Batenburg from Mindset Works will speak about incorporating the Mindset principles into various aspects of our lives including student classroom efforts, work life, relationships and community service efforts. Facilitated breakout sessions will continue the discussion. Other activities being planned include a session for faculty and staff on January 11 and an interactive family meeting that same evening at 7:00 p.m. An interactive webinar, which is still being scheduled, is also in the works.

I hope that you are able to enjoy the winter holiday season as a time for rest and reflection in preparation for the New Year. I would like to wish the entire District 90 community a safe, healthy, and happy holiday season, and look forward to seeing our students return in 2018

Happy Holidays!

Informing Families About Weather-Related School Closings
Despite the recent wave of unseasonably warm weather, it's well known that cold and snowy weather conditions are on the way. That is why it is important for District families to know how information will be communicated regarding the potential school closings caused by inclement weather. The most critical factor in deciding to close or open school will always be student and staff safety. Whenever possible, District 90 will communicate a firm decision about school closings or delayed school opening by around 8:00 p.m. the evening before. In the event that the weather situation is uncertain and a definitive decision cannot reasonably be made by this time, the District will communicate the possibility of a school closing or delayed opening, again around 8:00 p.m., with the reminder that additional information will be forthcoming. If conditions deteriorate significantly and closing school or delaying its opening is necessary after this time, we will issue notification no later than 6:00 a.m. the morning of the day schools are to be closed.

District 90 informs families about the possibility of school closing situation by 8:00 p.m. the night before in order for families to make any necessary advanced preparations. Families, faculty, staff, and the greater River Forest community will be informed of any decision via the School Messenger notification system. Information will also be placed on the District 90 website (home page and all school pages), Facebook, and sent to the Emergency Closing Center ( emergencyclosingcenter.com ), which communicates school closings to the area's television and radio stations.
Winter Break is on its Way
Winter Break will be here soon. District 90 schools will be closed from Monday, December 25 to Friday, January 6. Schools will be dismissed at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, December 22. The District Office and all school buildings will be closed from December 25, 2017 to January 1, 2018. On January 2, the District Office will reopen with amended hours until
January 6 from 8:00 a.m. 3: 00 p.m. On January 8, school resumes for students and school staff, and the District Office returns to regular business hours of 8:00 a.m. to
4: 30 p.m.
PARCC Results Discussed at Town Hall Forum
District 90 students continue to demonstrate consistently strong academic achievement, as determined by state standardized testing measures. The Illinois State Board of Education recently released results from the 2017 Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) assessment, which are also reported on the Illinois Report Card for public schools. Overall, District 90 students achieved levels of proficiency that more than doubled the state average. The average scores for the District indicate that more than 63 percent (63.4%) of students met or exceeded proficiency in math and more than 73 percent (73.3%) met or exceeded proficiency in English/Language Arts (ELA). While these PARCC scores indicate that District students continue to perform at a high level, the results also indicate that there are ongoing opportunities for growth, especially with certain sub-groups of students and in the area of math.

To help explain the relevance of the results and provide additional information about student assessment, the District held a Town Hall Forum with the topic, Student Achievement and Standardized Assessment in District 90. The Town Hall Forum replaced the normally scheduled Committee of the Whole meeting. Dr. Alison Hawley, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, briefed nearly 40 audience members with notable highlights from the PARCC and Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessments. She also provided an overview of the District assessment portfolio, and explained the purposes of assessment in District 90, such as facilitating communication with families, helping to align curriculum with Illinois Learning Standards, providing a platform for monitoring student progress, and informing student placement for students in grades 4-8. Dr. Hawley presented grade-by-grade and racial/ethnic student performance results as well as provided an explanation of the concepts of academic growth and academic achievement. When reviewed together, academic growth and academic achievement indicators provide a better understanding of student progress than just looking at PARCC or MAP assessment scores alone. Roosevelt Named Apple Distinguished School
Roosevelt was recently named as an Apple Distinguished School by technology leader Apple, Inc. This is the second time that Roosevelt has received this two-year designation (2017-19). The honor recognizes Roosevelt and District 90's commitment to continuous improvement and innovation by embedding technology across the entire school environment, and especially in teaching and learning. The ways that technology are used are many and varied. For example, students are able to reflect, summarize, or synthesize their learning via word processing with Pages, and to record their voice and pen strokes to show how they solve math problems. They have used technology to produce comics about Shakespeare and the Declaration of Independence, and created webs to show relationships between historical events. Roosevelt's comprehensive deployment of technology is comprehensive, including one-to-one iPads for all students and MacBook and iPad devices for teachers.

You can download a copy of Roosevelt's 2017- 2019 technology initiative  iBook here. (Please note: This book is available for download with iBooks on your Mac or iPad, and with iTunes on your computer. Multi-touch books can be read with iBooks on your Mac or iPad. Books with interactive features may work best on an iPad. iBooks on your Mac requires OS X 10.9 or later.)
Lincoln Students Recognize Veterans
Lincoln students commemorated Veterans Day with a special assembly that honored the service of our nation's veterans. With 25 veterans in attendance, students sang patriotic songs, recited poems, and grade four students read veteran biographies. All students also made thank you cards that were delivered to the Hines VA Hospital. Immediately following the assembly, several veterans visited classrooms to be interviewed by the students. The moving and memorable assembly enabled students to learn more about veterans and their contributions in our community.
Willard's Purple Palooza Entertains Hundreds
With more than 400 people in attendance, Willard's Annual Dance was an evening of fun for the entire family. A DJ and vibe dancers helped to keep participants dancing and enjoying the festivities. The dance also raised nearly $4,000 for the PTO.
Roosevelt Fall Fun Fest Enjoyed by All
Roosevelt's Fall Fun Fest repeated its successful run with loads of students enjoying a variety of activities. From the ever-popular silly string contests to the spa and salon, students had a rollicking good time. The great turnout of students helped to keep the Fall Fun Fest Roosevelt PTO's second largest fundraiser.
Willard and Lincoln Host Halloween Activities
It was a sight to see as TV and film characters strutted alongside mythical creatures, superheroes, and friendly animals. For students at both Willard and Lincoln, Halloween featured an afternoon of costumes, parades, and classroom parties. Visiting storytellers regaled students with humorous Halloween tales. Parents and residents joined in the fun as they viewed the procession of costumed students and teachers. Please see some of the photos from the fun-filled afternoon.

Success of All Youth is Surveying How Youth Use Out-of-School Time
The Success of All Youth (SAY), in collaboration with Roosevelt University's Policy Research Collaborative, is conducting a survey about the needs ofyoung people during times when school is not in session. The survey will access the barriers and challenges as well as the opportunities and solutions that families encounter as they search for activities and resources that engage young people during periods when school is not in session. These out of school periods include before-and after-school, regularly scheduled school breaks, summer vacation, and other times when school is out of session. If you are currently seeking or using out-of-school activities and services for your child, please consider participating in this survey. To participate,  click here.
