Mayor Walsh, Macy's, Boston Bruins Foundation Lead Annual Coat Drive

Mayor Martin Walsh helped Macy's and the Boston Bruins Foundation hand out more than 200 coats to Boston Public School students as part of the 4th Annual Macy's Coat Drive on Dec. 11th.

"I want to thank Macy's for being a wonderful partner for our city, and for putting on the 4th annual Christmas Coat Drive," said Mayor Walsh. "This coat drive has become a great Boston tradition, and has a selfless mission of ensuring our kids stay warm and protected this winter. This event demonstrates the very best of our city, showing that Boston is a city that takes care of one another."

Check out a video of the event below:

Mayor Walsh was joined by Bob Sweeney, the executive director for the Boston Bruins Foundation, as they helped children try on and choose brand new coats. Many Macy's employees were also on hand fitting kids for proper sized jackets and making sure they got the coats they wanted.

The annual coat drive is a partnership between the City of Boston, Macy's and the Boston Bruins Foundation.

Mayor Walsh also visited downtown Boston on Dec. 17th to visit Santa Claus and to participate in a Hanukkah menorah lighting ceremony held in Downtown Crossing.
New Dunkin' (Not Donuts) Now Open on Tremont Street

The first-ever Dunkin' restaurant in Boston opened last week at 147 Tremont St. Customers will note the store's  name doesn't include "Donuts," as it's part of a new branding effort by Dunkin' Donuts to let customers know they're more than just coffee and donuts.

On Dec. 14th, the new store, which has a "fresher and brighter" look, gave out food samples, 500 free medium cups of coffee and presented a check to the No Kid Hungry campaign.

The new store is operated by franchisee Watermark Donut Company, which operates more than 30 Dunkin' Donuts in the Boston area. Watermark Donut Company has operated Dunkin' Donuts in the downtown Boston area since 1990, including several in the BID.

Based in Canton, Mass., the company announced earlier this year that it would be testing out dropping "Donuts" from its name at several stores. The company noted it's been calling itself Dunkin' in advertisements for years.
Boston Tea Party Reenactment Kicks Off at Old South Meeting House with
Spirited Colonial Meeting

People of all ages participated in the 244th Boston Tea Party Reenactment on Dec. 16th to celebrate and re-enact the single most important event leading up to the American Revolution -- the Boston Tea Party!

The event started off with an authentic, spirited and theatrical colonial meeting at the Old South Meeting House (310 Washington St.), above, to protest the colonial tax on tea. From there the public was led by fife and drum corps and marched from the Old South Meeting House to the Boston Harbor where Griffin's Wharf once stood along the same route Patriots walked to Boston Harbor to destroy the tea.

At the Boston Harbor the Sons of Liberty stormed aboard the Brig Beaver to destroy chest after chest of East India Company Tea. They then dumped the tea into the harbor just as the colonists did 244 years ago.

Shoveling, Parking and More:
What to Know About Winter in Boston

Whether you're a property owner, a homeowner or a resident with a car it's important to know about shoveling and parking regulations, snow emergencies and more. The City of Boston has a resourceful webpage providing all necessary info  here, and below is important info to know for when the white stuff comes down.

Shoveling Info:
Click here for City of Boston rules on clearing snow.
Property owners must:
  • Clear sidewalks within three hours of snowfall ending or three hours after sunrise if it snows overnight, and
  • Clear at least a 42-inch-wide path for wheelchairs and strollers.
Do not shovel snow into the street or you can be subject to fines. Also please remember to:
  • Remove ice to bare pavement or make as level as possible and treat with sand, sawdust, or similar material.
  • Please clear any snow that may be blocking a handicap ramp, fire hydrant or catch basin.
  • Don't leave snow or ice on stairways or fire escapes. All common means of exit must be clear in case of fire or another emergency.
What To Do With Your Car When It Snows
During a snow emergency main roads need to be clear for plows and emergency vehicles. If you're parked on one of these main roads during a snow emergency, you may be ticketed and your vehicle may be towed. How do you know if you can't park on a street during a snow emergency? Check the signs posted on the street. Also, here is map of restricted roads due to a snow emergency.

Click here for a City of Boston list of discount parking garages available during snow emergencies. Click here for the BID's webpage of local parking garages. It is recommended you contact the parking garages to see if they are open for vehicles.

Please also call the BID's dispatch line at 617-261-0066 to report sidewalks, handicapped ramps or other Downtown Crossing public ways that need to be shoveled. Our Ambassadors will be out in the snow 24 hours a day making sure the sidewalks are clear!
