From your Principal...
Dear STM Families,

Over the last several days I have had many conversations with parents regarding the recent school shooting in Florida. As your Principal, and a parent myself, I know safety is on all of our minds right now. Like you, I worry when my son leaves for school and am so grateful when he returns home safely each day. I wish I could assure you that nothing bad will ever happen, but I can let you know that every member of the STM faculty and staff is dedicated to caring for your children and we do not take this responsibility lightly. Along with practicing regular drills, we have had school-wide reviews of our campus policies by law enforcement agents in the past and are in the process of scheduling a new review as soon as possible.  I have worked with my staff to put together an Adhoc committee to make recommendations on the issue of school safety.  We have registered for an upcoming webinar - Columbine Tragedy: What Happened and Lessons Learned . In this live webinar, Frank DeAngelis, retired principal of Columbine High School, will go step-by-step through the events that occurred that tragic day at Columbine and provide his advice on emergency management and planning. Mr. DeAngelis will discuss the aftermath and share the leadership lessons he learned as the focus of an international firestorm.  We will then meet with the entire staff to share what we learn. The Catholic School's Office has also provided us with a link to a video, Defeating a Violent Intruder and Getting Prepared to Defeat a Violent Intruder, which will help us, as a faculty/staff, to assess classroom activities and procedures.

In addition, I have met with one of the constables assigned to our area and was assured that they will conduct more drive-thru checks of the school and surrounding area several times a day. In addition, I was told a constable will be in the parking lot on Fridays when our children travel to and from Mass.

Furthermore regarding safety, we have noticed quite a few students being dropped off at school prior to the gym doors opening at 7:30a.m.  All children must stay with their parent/guardian until the teacher opens the gym doors.  Please do not leave your child unattended.  If you are in need of dropping your child before 7:30, please check with Nina Coltharp in the preschool and sign up for our Early Bird Program with drop off as early at 7:00a.m.

Congratulations to our band members who participated in the St. Edward Catholic School Competition.  We had so many students place in this competition and are so proud of all our band members.  Please see the attached for all results.

Finally, please include our 2nd grade students in your prayers as they receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation this Thursday morning. Receiving God's Graces through Penance is a true gift in all our lives.  Let us pray for these students as they receive this sacrament for the first time.
Yours in Christ,

Kristen Thome
Principal

From the Clinic...
Recess time for our students is designed to be a safe, relaxing time to expend energy, socialize with friends and get some practice in collaboration and social skills. In order for all students to be safe we have to limit some activities that are more suited to a supervised training environment. Please review with your students that practicing gymnastic skills or competing in sports activities at a level of intensity consistent with a "Team" or "Club" environment are not permitted.

Recess games and activities have the goal of inclusion for all students. Encourage your students to think about how they can interact with classmates in ways that encourage physical activity, demonstrate compassion and build bonds of friendship. The health and safety of our students is our primary concern and we appreciate your support in building a culture of compassion and inclusion both inside and outside of the classroom.

What I appreciate about my PAWS experiences: "The number one reason I value volunteering with PAWS is the connection it gives me to the school and to my children! I also feel like I am continuing to learn new things everytime I come, I've assisted with fundraisers, with different departments and with different staff I might not have had the chance to get to know. It has been a great experience and I look forward to going to school every week!

The faculty and staff of STM are thankful for all the efforts of our PAWS Parent Volunteers!!
