FEATURED EVENT: Liberty Hosts Play Smart Heart Screenings
Liberty High School hosted two days of heart screenings for students through the Providence Heart Institute's Play Smart Youth Heart Screenings program last week. Offered free of charge as part of an integrated health outreach program, Play Smart has screened nearly 22,000 students ages 12-18 over the past five years. In that time, they have identified more than 1,200 students for follow-up and treatment. If freshman Quillen Franklin had already received such a screening, he likely would have known about his undiagnosed heart condition prior to his sudden collapse at school last November. On that day, thanks to the quick action and delivery of both CPR and AED shock by School Resource Officer Emory Souza, and LPNs Angelica Suminski and Tatiana Mele Fa'anofo, Quillen's life was saved. Pictured here in front of several classmates, Quillen was the first to receive a heart screening on Thursday, Feb. 22 - one day after his 15th birthday.

UPCOMING
EVENTS
Last week's weather led to a rare early release, a closure, and a two-hour delay. The incidents provided an opportunity for us to really test the full capabilities of our new integrated website, messaging, and app system. They also prompted some feedback about the user experience that we will use to both refine those systems and provide some answers to frequently-asked questions.

Optional spaghetti dinner available for $10. Learn more here

Read Across America Day is March 2
Occurring on the birthday of renowned children's book author Dr. Seuss, Read Across America Day is intended to celebrate and foster a lifelong love of reading. This year, the National Education Association is encouraging people to share which childhood book meant the most to them. To participate, take a picture of the book and post your "shelfie" on social media using #Shelfie and #ReadAcrossAmerica. Several schools are still in need of guest readers, so please check with your child's school if you are interested. And students are in for a treat if they eat a school lunch on Friday! They can choose from Green Eggs and Ham with Pancakes; a One Fish, Two Fish Burger; a Lorax Burger (hamburger); or a Horton Burger (cheeseburger).

South Meadows Students Support their Sparrow and Feed the Homeless
The weekend of Feb. 17, South Meadows Students held an event called "Feed Portland" at which they compiled over 150 bags of food for the homeless with items donated by students and staff. Their Sparrow, Kian, along with his mom and some of their friends, assisted the students with the project and then delivered the bags to downtown Portland. Completing service projects like this are how students can earn money in support of their Sparrow's medical expenses. Learn more about Sparrow Clubs on their website.
