Mayor Liccardo and City Leaders Release Ambitious Climate Plan

Mayor Liccardo stood with City leaders, community stakeholders and climate activists to release Climate Smart San Jose, a comprehensive climate plan that makes San Jose one of the first American cities to plot "a path to Paris" by setting ambitious targets to curb our greenhouse gas
emissions and reduce water consumption. At the press conference, Mayor Liccardo explained that the City will waste no time getting this plan off the ground: This year, San Jose will launch Community Choice Energy, to offer residents and businesses the option to purchase clean, green electricity at prices competitive to private utilities. Among the ambitious notable targets in the plan:
  • By 2021, San José will make 100 percent emission-free electricity available to all San Jose Clean Energy users.
  • By 2030, San José will reduce carbon emissions from vehicular trips by 1 million tons/year by facilitating the expansion of ride sharing, electric vehicles, and public transit in the city.
  • By 2040, San José will become the first city in the world to produce 1 gigawatt of solar power (which is enough to power the equivalent of 250,000 homes).

City of San Jose approves Compensation Agreement for the Sale of Land Parcels near Diridon Station

The City Council approved a Compensation Agreement that will help facilitate the sale of five former Redevelopment properties near Diridon Station for a potential Google development. Per the terms of the Compensation Agreement, the properties were valued at $67 million, based on appraisals conducted by both the City and County - a sum 2.5 times what the City originally paid for the properties.

"This Compensation Agreement allows us to advance discussions about how we can create a vibrant, architecturally iconic, transit-focused village around Diridon Station," said Mayor Sam Liccardo. "I look forward to engaging with our community in a robust discussion about how we can realize our shared ambitions for our city."

The City completed the second of what will be 15 public hearings over the potential sale of these parcels. In addition, the City has launched its robust community engagement plan, which will entail numerous opportunities over the next several months for the public to share its concerns and ambitions for a proposed Google complex. Residents can check the Diridon Station Area informational page of the City's website to see updates as they become available.
