A Note from Susan Holt

Thanks to our Ivymount SMART team for organizing our first ever Read Across Ivymount, scheduled for this Friday, March 3rd!  "We're excited to make Read Across Ivymount an annual event. Our program this year includes several special literacy partners. We're thrilled to host a Skype interview with author Claudia Mills for our students in the library," commented Dale Frengel, Director of Curriculum.
Look for photos and a recap from all of the special "Read Across Ivymount" activities in next week's IvyNotes.

We are so proud of our MAP students who performed at the Shakespeare Festival hosted by the  Folger Shakespeare Library

Shakespeare Festival
hosted by the Folger Shakespeare Library

"Our goal in this production of four scenes from Henry V was to  present Shakespeare's take on a real medieval campaign in the Hundred Years War. The language and especially the vocabulary were novel to our students  but they mastered it all. Their understanding was the greatest motivation for their learning their lines and actions. Costumes and props were simple but impressive and also inspirational. We kept the rehearsals  short, intense but also fun. No one wasted time, positive suggestions were valued and frequently used, and everyone had plenty of work and pulled their weight. It was a wonderful experience," explained Ed Tamulevich, Ivymount Media Specialist.

Ivymount is excited to launch a new curriculum in the form of a two-book set called,
"Conversation Club: Teaching Children with Autism and Other Social Cognition Challenges to Engage in Successful Conversation Club with Peers."

Our staff works hard to support our students with higher functioning autism to interact with each other during lunch break and recess.  About five years ago, our interdisciplinary team came up with the idea of a conversation "club."

Lynn Cannon will present more on  "Conversation Club" at our Special Needs Resource Fair on Sunday, March 11th.
