This week we have two special PTSA events on the schedule including Chili's Spirit Night on Wednesday and Hat Day on Friday. Any funds collected from PTSA events like these are plowed back into programs for our students and teachers. Therefore, if your household can participate, thank you very much for the support.

OCPS released another special bulletin Friday evening relating to student health and safety:

At this time of heightened concern over school safety, we want to thank you in advance for helping us. Here are three ways you can assist.

First, we are seeing social media posts about perceived security weaknesses at specific schools. That kind of information - true or not, can make schools vulnerable to intruders.  If you see or hear something that worries you regarding school safety, please report it to law enforcement or to an adult at the school. Remember that school safety matters are considered confidential, by state law.

Second, pranks and jokes interrupt school and raise anxiety. Such acts are taken seriously and have resulted in discipline and arrest. Please help reinforce this with our children.

Third, we ask that you remind our students to report issues to an adult rather than spreading rumors. Don't spread it, report it!

I hope you enjoy this latest update and have wonderful week.

In Knights Honor,

Stephanie R. Jackson, M. Ed.
Principal, Lake Nona Middle School

How to (Almost) Ruin Your Summer by Taryn Souders (Review by Goodreads.com)

ruin summer Top Three Reasons Camp Minnehaha is The Worst:

1. The spiders (wayyyy too many legs)
2. King Arthur (a rampaging goat intent on my destruction)
3. Victoria a.k.a. The Diva (an evil cabin mate obsessed with French beauty products and my humiliation)

Chloe McCorkle knew a summer camp where you had to learn a career was a bad idea. She tried to tell her parents, but they just had to go on vacation to Alaska and ship her off for two weeks. It's not ideal, but she's going to try to make the best of it. She might even learn some skills that will help her make money for the new bike she's been eyeing. But Chloe quickly discovers there's only one area at which she excels; she manages to get more demerits than anyone else in camp...

Valentine's Day rewards for our Knight SSYRA Reward Card Holders

Pizza Man Valentine's Day is always a memorable occasion in middle school, and I try to make the day even more special for my SSYRA Reward Card holders. Students who were card holders were able to come in and enjoy a delicious donut and select an adorable ninja or cuddly hedgehog. And then top it off with a lollipop for the road!

The next event will be a pizza party for any students who have read at least 10 of the books by Spring Break! That reward will be announced the week after we return from break and eligible students will receive an invitation with the details.

Monday's Motivational Moment

THE ELEPHANT ROPE

As a man was passing the elephants behind the visitors' section of the city zoo, he suddenly stopped, confused by the fact that these huge creatures were being held by only a small rope tied to their front leg. No chains, no cages. It was obvious that the elephants could, at anytime, break away from their bonds but for some reason, they did not.

He saw a trainer nearby and asked why these animals just stood there and made no attempt to get away. "Well," the trainer said, "when they are very young and much smaller we use the same size rope to tie them and, at that age, it's enough to hold them. As they grow up, they are conditioned to believe they cannot break away. They believe the rope can still hold them, so they never try to break free."

The man was amazed. These animals could at any time break free from their bonds but because they believed they couldn't, they were stuck right where they were.

The lesson for our Knights? Like the elephants, how many of us go through life hanging onto a belief that we cannot do something, simply because we failed at it once before? Failure is part of learning; we should never give up the struggle in life.
