In the last two weeks, 88 women have applied to The Gatehouse with hopes to end cycles of abuse and poverty, and build new lives for themselves and their children.
 
As we prepare to give some of these new families the hand up they need for permanent change, as well as serve our current 177 people (79 women and 98 children today) it reminds us "that the most beautiful people we have known are those who have known defeat, suffering, loss, and have found their way out of the depths. These persons have an appreciation and understanding of life that fills them with compassion, gentleness, and a deep loving concern. Beautiful people do not just happen."

If you're someone who's served with us at The Gatehouse, you've witnessed the ups and downs, hard work and gumption which our members have exhibited on their journey to healing and self-supportiveness.
 
The lasting impact you make by offering your time, talent, treasure and ties are crucial so women are empowered to work their personal, intentional plan for permanent, positive change.
 
Two upcoming ways where you can make a lasting impact so families have necessary resources in 2018, are the:
  • The HandUp for Success Luncheon featuring Pepsico's Chairman and CEO Indra Nooyi and Richard Fisher, ex-President of the Dallas Federal Reserve Bank, and
  • Premier Academy, on track to open this summer, which will provide community kids and Gatehouse kids with early learning so they'll be more than kindergarten ready. To stop cycles of abuse and poverty, we must invest as much in our children as we do our women.
Without a plan, good intentions fail. Without a plan and all of us implementing it together, good intentions fail. So thank you for being part of the plan to give over 200 people this year what may be their once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to become healed and beautiful.

Lead with your Head, Heart and Hands  is the topic of this spring's HandUp for Success Corporate Luncheon. The luncheon ignites action between corporations and The Gatehouse so women and children in crisis have a hand up for permanent, positive change. 

At this year's luncheon, PepsiCo Chairman and CEO  Indra Nooyi will be introduced by AT&T Chairman, CEO and President  Randall Stephenson and interviewed by former Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas President and CEO  Richard Fisher on leadership and philanthropy. Q&A will be moderated by BNSF Railway Executive Chairman Matthew Rose

Premier Academy building update
Childcare is one of the top barriers that keep women from becoming self-supportive.

The exterior is almost completed and work is underway to finish the interior by summer. Watch for more details on the grand opening and applying to the program this summer.

LEARN ABOUT OUR PROGRAM
Each month one element of the Gatehouse Independent Life Program will be highlighted.
You'll learn more about the needs that traditionally hold women back from breaking free from crisis situations: safe housing, food, clothing, transportation, legal aid, career guidance, childcare, financial literacy, counseling and life skills training.

ILP highlight: FOOD
  
The sun is edging above the horizon as the Gatehouse refrigerated truck backs into the grocery store's loading dock, a routine staff and volunteers follow every Monday through Saturday to keep the shelves of the General Store stocked. 

With an average of 2,500 pounds of food picked up each week from partners like Albertsons-Tom Thumb, Aldi, Central Market, Kimberly-Clark, Kroger, Natural Grocers,  Schwan's and Tarrant Area  Food Bank , General Store volunteers are busy  six days a week stocking shelves, managing inventory, and helping members shop.  
 
A fully stocked mini-grocery store at The Gatehouse, the General Store is a crucial part of not only providing for our members' basic needs but also helping them learn budgeting and meal planning.

Based on the size of their family and the phase of the program they are in, members receive a weekly "meal ticket". As members progress through the program, they begin shopping outside of The Gatehouse to help them practice budgeting and shopping skills in a real-world setting.
How you can help: 
  • Volunteer. Help with one of our 15 two-hour shifts a week or with a daily food pick-up and delivery. Learn more about becoming a volunteer here or email [email protected] for more information. 
  • Give. Help fund an inventory system or help us stock staple items and toiletries. Drop off donations at The Gatehouse between 9 am and 5 pm, Monday through Friday.
