High school showcases take place at 5:30 p.m. today

Do you have an eighth-grader entering high school next year? Take him or her to her future school to learn about all its offerings!

Each Northwest ISD high school (including Byron Nelson, Eaton, Northwest and Steele Accelerated) will host a showcase today, Jan. 25, where incoming students can learn about campus programs and opportunities. Each showcase will last from 5:30 to 7 p.m. except for Eaton's, which will last from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

School faculty will provide students and families with information for course selection for the coming school year, and some current students will also be on hand to share their experiences.

If you have any questions about a high school showcase, please contact your future campus's front office. Phone numbers for each campus are as follows:
  • Byron Nelson: 817-698-5600
  • Eaton: 817-698-7300
  • Northwest: 817-215-0200
  • Steele: 817-698-5800
Vote for your preferred 2018-19 calendar

Public voting is now taking place for Northwest ISD's 2018-19 calendar, with one option featuring a schedule similar to the current year's calendar and the other option featuring slightly longer school days in exchange for two fewer days in the school year.

Both options are similar, with Calendar No. 1 starting school on Monday, Aug. 27, and Calendar No. 2 starting school on Tuesday, Aug. 28. Both calendar options end school on May 31, 2019. No. 1 features 173 school days, while No. 2 features 171 school days, thanks to the additional 5 instructional minutes for each day. In the Calendar No. 2 option, school start times would remain unchanged but ending times would all be pushed back 5 minutes for a regular school day.

In both calendars, winter break lasts from Dec. 24 to Jan. 7, 2019, for students, and spring break takes place March 11-15. Thanksgiving break in both calendars is the full holiday week, Nov. 19-23, for students.

The first day for teachers (Aug. 16) and last day for teachers (June 1, 2019) are the same on both calendars, and both calendars feature six early-release days.

Community members are invited to vote for the option they prefer at www.nisdtx.org/calendarvote for the next two weeks. After the two-week voting period, the school board will vote to approve a final calendar.

NHSTV named top student-run daily live show in Southwest U.S. for third straight year
The 2017-18 cast and crew of NHSTV

Student Television Network has named NHSTV, Northwest High School's student-run television station, as the Best Daily Live Show in the Southwest Region, the third consecutive year the station has been named among the top in its U.S. region.

NHSTV received the honor as part of the 2017-18 Broadcast Excellence Awards, where it competed against other high school stations from across Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Arkansas. The national champion will be announced at the STN Convention on March 16 in Nashville, Tennessee, during the STN Excellence Awards Show.

The daily show features students in a full range of roles, including hosts, reporters, camera operators, technical crewmembers and more. NHSTV is overseen by Jeremy Rawe, its news director and facilitator of Northwest ISD's Academy of Creative Media Production housed at Northwest High School.

Start your child ahead with pre-kindergarten
A pre-kindergarten student at Love Elementary

Have a child who will be 4 years old by Sept. 1, 2018? Make plans to enroll him or her in pre-kindergarten to get a head start on being in a school environment and learning.

Two forms of pre-K are available at Northwest ISD, a state-assisted program and a tuition-based program. Families must meet specific requirements for enrollment in the free, state-funded program (such as economic or military requirements), while the district will use a lottery system to select children for inclusion in the tuition-based program. Both are half-day programs (7:40 to 11:20 a.m. or 11:20 a.m. to 3 p.m.).

The tuition-based program is paid in 10 monthly installments of $377.80 from August 2018 to May 2019.  Additional information about pre-K at Northwest ISD elementary schools will be available soon, with the district currently planning to open its lottery registration system on Feb. 1.

For more information about both state-funded and tuition-based pre-K at Northwest ISD, click here. Expect additional information in the coming weeks.
