ACT Work Keys Testing Date -
February 28, 2018 -
ONLY JUNIORS REPORT FROM 7:25-11:20 AM,
ALL STUDENTS REPORT FROM 11:20-2:45 pm
*Buses will run two routes for pick up on February 28, one in the morning for Juniors, one later for the Freshmen, Sophomores, and Seniors.

Dear Parents or Guardians of Juniors,

Juniors will take the state-mandated ACT Plus Writing and the ACT WorkKeys on Tuesday, February 27 and Wednesday, February 28, respectively. The tests can only be taken on these dates, or their makeup dates of March 20 and March 21. It is critically important that every effort be made for your child to be in attendance and on time to school on these test dates. There is no cost and no registration to take the test on these dates.

These tests are part of the Wisconsin accountability system and are taken by all juniors in the state. Results are used in a variety of ways, including college admissions, curriculum and instructional decisions at HUHS, and as part of the School Report Card rating issued by the Department of Instruction (DPI).

Our average composite score on the ACT last year was 19.9, below many other area high schools. We certainly want to improve this, but to do so it is important for all students to take the test and to give their best effort, regardless of their plans after high school.

The following information is important for both you and your child and applies to both test days.  Please take a moment to review these items with your child.

  • Juniors will be in school 7:25-1:00 on Tuesday and 7:25-2:45 on Wednesday. Normal busing is provided.
  • Students must have soft-lead #2 pencils (no mechanical pencils) and a picture ID, such as their student ID or driver's license; a calculator is also strongly recommended.
  • Cell phones and electronic devices, other than calculators, are not allowed during testing and breaks. Any student using any electronic device, other than a calculator, during testing or breaks, will be dismissed from testing. This includes cell phones buzzing or beeping during testing and breaks.
  • Please contact the Attendance Office if you need to reach your child for any reason. Do not call or text your child directly.
  • Students may not read, talk, or do other work while testing is in progress.
  • Eating or drinking in the testing room is prohibited.
  On Tuesday, February 27 only:
  • A free breakfast will be served from 7:00-7:40.
  • Testing begins at approximately 8:00. Students should plan to arrive by 7:25. Any student arriving after testing begins will not be able to test that day.
  • Free water and snacks will be available during a 15-minute break to occur at approximately 10:15. Your child may bring snacks, but these can only be consumed during the break.
  • Students will be released after completing the tests around 1:00PM.
  • There will be an optional bag lunch option for sale for students in the cafeteria after testing concludes
On Wednesday, February 28 only:
  • There will be an optional breakfast available for purchase in the cafeteria from 6:45-7:15AM
  • Testing begins right away at 7:25. Again, any student arriving after testing begins will not be able to test that day.
  • There is a 15 minute break, but no snacks will be provided. Please plan accordingly.
  • Lunch begins at 10:45 for juniors or those who wish to eat lunch at HUHS
  • Freshmen, sophomores, and seniors will report by 11:20, as school will resume with 25 minute classes 11:20-2:45

You can also assist by encouraging your child to give his or her best effort while taking the assessments.  Here are some tips to help your child prepare for successful testing:

  • Keep a positive attitude and simply do your best
  • Pay attention to the directions as they are read
  • Pace yourself
  • Complete the easier questions first, and then go back to finish the rest
  • Try to eliminate some of the choices, and then choose the best answer
  • Answer every question, even if you have to guess
  • Don't worry if others finish before you; testing does not end early, even if everyone has finished
  • Go back and recheck your answers, if you finish before time is called
  • Make sure you have filled in all answers for the test

Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns you have. I can be reached at  rachel.janczak@huhs.org , or by phone at  262-670-3200 ext.373 .

Thank you,

Health Minute
MY CHILD IS ILL, WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE TO PICK THEM UP FROM SCHOOL?
Students and parents are reminded that the correct procedures for leaving school are as follows: If a student is ill, they should go to the Health Office located in the Attendance Office.  Ms. Scholz will make the necessary calls to get permission for the student to be picked up or leave and then issue the student a permit. Students should not be texting or calling family or friends for permission to leave school.  A student must have a blue permit from a staff member in order to leave school property or they are considered truant.  After the student receives a permit to leave, they take the permit to the front security entrance and present it to the receptionist.  If they are getting a ride home, they should then remain in the building until their ride arrives for security purposes.  Please review with your student these important school procedure to help keep your child safe at school.

Vaping Letter Sent to Students
February 21, 2018

Dear HUHS Students,

The popularity of vapor products or "vaping," has created new concerns for our high school community. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, more than 2 million middle and high school students were using e-cigarettes in 2016. It also estimated that in 2016, approximately 11% of high school students and 4.3% of middle school students were using these products.

As shown by the graph on the next page, from the U.S.F.D.A., vapor products range widely in appearance. Regardless of appearance or design, this type of product uses an "e-liquid" that may or may not contain nicotine, as well as flavorings. "Vapes" are composed of a liquid cartridge, an atomizer, and a rechargeable battery. The liquid cartridge is the flavored part of the device used to create the vapor; it is also the part of the device that typically contains nicotine. The atomizer heats the device when the user inhales and is charged by the battery.

We are concerned about the use/sale/possession of vapor products at HUHS and are asking for your cooperation in keeping these products out of our school. We are concerned about the illegality of underage vaping, as well as the potential long-term health risks.

HUHS will be increasing disciplinary action for use/sale/possession of any vaping paraphernalia (mouthpiece, heating element, battery, juice, etc.) to a minimum of one (1) day for the first offense with progressive discipline for subsequent offenses.

Use/ possession/sale of vaping products is also a violation of the HUHS Athletic Code and will result in missed time from activities/games. HUHS will turn over any vaping items to the Hartford Police, and students will receive a municipal citation from Hartford Police for the sale, purchase, and/or the possession of vapor products for up to  $281.50.

We don't want you to risk your health, miss school due to suspension for vaping, and/or violate the law. We are asking that you not use "vapes" and "if you see something, say something". Below is a helpful resource that you can use to get the latest report on e-cigarette (vaping) use from the Surgeon General's 2016 report.

We appreciate you following school policies and rules to help maintain an orderly, safe, and productive learning environment. If you have questions or concerns, please contact me, Scott Otto, Dean of Students (EMAIL:  scott.otto@huhs.org or TEL:  262-670-3200).

Sincerely,

Scott Otto
Dean of Students

UW Campus Regional Placement Testing

Senior students who have been admitted to a UW campus are invited to participate in Regional Placement Testing. As a result of taking the tests, students find out their appropriate level of math, English, and foreign language to begin in college.
Students can register online for Regional Placement Testing, beginning February 1. The benefit of Regional Placement Testing is that students can take the test close to where they live, and they don't need to travel to the campus that they'd like to attend. Also, students need register for only one placement test even if they have been admitted to different UW campuses, or if they change their mind about which UW campus to attend. All UW campuses have access to each student's scores.

Early College Credit Program (ECCP)

The 2017-19 State of Wisconsin Biennial Budget included new language regarding high school students who take courses for college credit. The budget combines the Course Options and Youth Options programs into a single new program called the Early College Credit Program (ECCP).
High school students at public and private high schools may be permitted to enroll in a UW System institution, or an alternative private, non-profit institution of higher education to take courses to earn high school credit, post-secondary credit, or both. Course costs are shared among the school district/private school and the state (and in some cases, the student's family).
Students in grades  9-12 may be eligible to take courses during the fall, spring, or summer semesters. Students may submit their completed forms to school officials by  March 1 for summer/fall semester - or  October 1for spring semester.
For more information, contact your child's counselor.

All students considering a two or four-year college experience are reminded to take the ACT test during their junior year.  Students can register for the ACT at www.actstudent.org. When registering, students will need the HUHS school code, which is 500-850.   Please remember to check the website to see if the college(s) your son or daughter is considering requires or recommends the ACT writing test.   The test fee for the ACT is $46.00 and the ACT with writing is $62.50.   If you feel you cannot afford the test fee, please ask your child's counselor if you are eligible for a fee waiver.

HUHS is an ACT test center for all testing dates (except February 10).  The test dates for the 2017-2018 school year are:

Note:   Please keep in mind all juniors are required by state law to take the ACT at the high school on February 27 (no cost to the student on February 27).    When considering whether or not to sign up to take the February 10 or April 14 ACT, it may be best for students to take the February 27 test, then decide whether or not to retake the test in June or July based upon February results.

Hartford Gymnasts Place Third
Good, not great.  That was the general response from Hartford Union, West Bend East and West Bend West's coaches after Saturday's North Shore Conference championship gymnastics meet.  The Orioles placed third with 137.925 points, while West (135.425) was fifth and East (131.725) was seventh.  Hartford's Emily Perkowski placed third all-around with a 35.975 score. Also in the top 10 of all-around were the Orioles'  Annie Mularski (seventh, 35.3) and West's Olivia Burns (ninth, 35.225).  "I've been struggling a little recently, and I think today was better on pretty much all the events," Perkowski said after placing top-6 in three of four events. "I improved on vault and got a new skill on bars, and I competed that for the first time today - and beam went better, too. So I'm happy for myself."  Perkowski tied for fourth on the balance beam (9.25), tied for fifth on the uneven bars (8.85) and placed sixth on the vault (8.9).  Teammate Annie Mularski was second on the vault (9.2).  "I thought it was OK," Mularski said of the team score. "It was still a decent score as far as what we got."  Coach Mary Scherr noted the  vault (35.2) and beam (34.525) scores were two of the best of their season.  "We really brought it back strong on beam, so I'm proud of how we finished," she said. "That was our best beam day of the year so far. Still have lots more in them that we can get on that beam, but I was really proud of how they finished today."  The beam score was good for third among eight teams, while the vault was second.  Whitefish Bay (143.075) earned first in all four events.  "It doesn't bother me that we made mistakes, because I'd rather have it this week than next week," Scherr said. "I look at it that way. I'd rather have it this way, that we maybe got our quirky things out of the way today." Click  here to read the full article.

Good Luck At State Jalen!
MADISON - Two county wrestlers are in the WIAA Division 1 state semifinals, still fighting for a state title.  Eight others will try to get "the next best thing."  Only Hartford Union's Jalen Suhler (120 pounds) and Slinger's Caleb Ziebell (138) won both their matches Thursday during the first day of the Individual Wrestling State Tournament at the Kohl Center in Madison.  Spuhler's experience at state a season ago made him shore up some things entering this year's tournament.  "Last year as a freshman, he was loose, as far as his technique," Hartford coach Corey McCauley said. "He's more solid and making his shots count more. He understands the level of wrestling and that he's not going to score a lot, but enough to win."  Spuhler shut out Racine Park's Isiah Culp, 4-0, in the first round. He then held on for a 6-5 victory in the quarterfinals against Portage's Jessie Tijerina. "He wrestled smart. He wrestled aggressive enough to make things count and was defensive enough for them not to score on us," McCauley said.  It was a different pace for Spuhler, who has several offensive weapons.  "The key is he doesn't take anything for granted," McCauley said. "He's used to scoring a lot of points. At state, you're not going to score a ton of points, and everyone is good. The mistakes matter and he kept himself in a good position."

Jalen wrestles again tonight at 7:00 PM in the State Semi-Final, Good Luck!

Hartford Union's Jalen Spuhler wrestles Portage's Jessie Tijerina in a Division 1 120-pound quarterfinal match during the WIAA Individual Wrestling State Tournament on Thursday at the Kohl Center in Madison. Spuhler won by a 6-5 decision to advance to a semifinal.
