Through COVID-19 We Carry On
& Save Lives

W e have all been feeling the effects of COVID-19, isolation, and social distancing. We thought we'd share some feel-good stories regarding the animals we have saved recently ( scroll down to view them all ).

Along with many individuals and businesses in the community, OPHS has had to cope with the financial challenges of the pandemic while re-imagining a new normal. We canceled our yearly fundraising event that typically generates over $200,000. These funds help greatly in allowing us to care for over 1500 animals that cross our threshold every year.

Additionally, our adoption revenue is down. This “perfect storm” has hit us hard. So now, we must ask for your help – with any donation you are able to give.

AND, we are honored to report your donation will be doubled due to a very generous donor who has pledged up to $25,000 IN MATCHING FUNDS. If you are able to help us, now is the time .

Many do not realize that we often go to extraordinary lengths to save lives. Now YOU can help us recoup the costs of the actual animals whose lives we have saved recently AND have those funds matched - making twice the impact .

OR you can donate any amount which will be doubled as well. EVERY donation, large or small, will help us save more lives and is greatly appreciated.

Please act now, this match is good through July 15th.
OR, help us recoup the costs of these recent
life-saving treatments:
Zoey was originally with us as a very TINY baby! She was the runt of the litter with no obvious health problems. As Zoey continued to grow, a congenital malformation she was born with began to cause a problem. Zoey had vascular tissue wrapped around her esophagus, preventing her from swallowing food normally and causing frequent regurgitation. This caused Zoey to lose weight due to her decreased nutritional intake.
The only "cure" for this problem was surgery so Zoey would be able to swallow food normally again. Even though it was a risky procedure, Zoey successfully underwent the surgery that was necessary to save her life. She is now living comfortably with her adopted family!

Cost of Zoey’s Surgical Procedure - $2,700.
Half of her costs have been paid already. Remaining = $1,350

Quinny is a 9-year-old female Maltese mix we rescued from a high-kill shelter in California. After she arrived we found that she was not spayed and had developed an infection in her uterus (a pyometra) that caused her to get very sick, very quickly. Even in her debilitated state, we decided to provide emergency surgery at a local vet clinic where she could get more advanced and supportive care than we could offer at the shelter. Fortunately, Quinny received her surgery and recovered nicely. She is now enjoying her new adoptive home. Another life saved!

Cost of Quinny's Medical Care - $2,000

Cresent is a 4-month-old female mixed breed pup that came to us with some bad skin we diagnosed as demodex (demodectic mange; a skin mite). Luckily, demodex is fairly easy to treat with a one time application of Bravecto.  We also treated her secondary bacterial infections with antibiotics and spayed Cresent before she went up for adoption. Now her coat is glossy and she is a happy girl.

Cost of Cresent's Medical Care - $400

Whiskers , a senior-aged cat, came to OPHS through a veterinary clinic. He had a very large wound on his back leg which required MANY bandage changes and daily checks until he was healed enough for adoption!

Cost of Whiskers' Long-term wound management and medications - $500

Rumi - a 10-year-old male Pomeranian, was surrendered to us from a home that did not feel they could care for him any longer. Unfortunately, Rumi arrived with a mouth full of very dirty and badly diseased teeth – so bad they needed to be removed! His dental health had been neglected for so long that he needed more than the average cleaning and extractions.

After Rumi had his dental needs taken care of, he was adopted to a new home that is experienced with Pomeranians. He is pampered and gets to go on neighborhood walks every day !

Cost of Rumi's Dental Care $1,400

Radius is a 3-year-old black and white Domestic Short Hair.  This poor little guy came to us with a badly broken leg. It was an open fracture with both bones of the lower front leg visible and nearly severed. The leg was in no way savable.
Radius was sent out to a partner veterinary clinic where he was able to have his front right leg amputated. He healed beautifully from his procedure was adopted soon after as a service cat!
Leg amputation costs - $1,400

Baker, a 7-year-old hound male, came to us as an owner-surrender. We found a tiny puncture on the bottom of his foot and a couple of his toes were mildly swollen. We conjectured this may have been caused by Baker stepping on a sharp stick that ultimately resulted in an infection from the puncture. He was started on antibiotics and pain meds and seemed better after a few days. But, after the medication, his foot began to swell up again. Our vet sedated Baker to see if any foreign material was lodged in his paw that might be causing his issues.

Once anesthetized, a piece of a stick that was nearly as wide as a pencil and over ½ inch long was found lodged under the skin where it migrated up to the top of his foot! Surgery was performed to remove the stick and further medication administered. Baker recovered very nicely. And yes, he found a new home too!

Baker's treatment costs - $900

Gladys , an 11-year-old female Yorkie mix, is an ADORABLE little lady that came to us with a very bad cough.  When her cough would not resolve, we pursued additional diagnostics to see if there was anything more we could do to make her feel better. Her bloodwork showed she was Hypothyroid, but otherwise in good health metabolically. Still not getting better, we brought her to a partner veterinary clinic for radiographs of her heart and lungs (OPHS does not have an x-ray machine). We found that she had a mild collapsing trachea, not life-threatening, so we began a journey of medications to relieve her coughing.

Unfortunately, some of the medications used to treat a collapsing trachea are quite expensive and she will need to be on them for life. It took us a little while to find the right home for Gladys that could look past her medical needs to see the super cute and sweet little lady that was more than deserving of a careful and responsible home. She eventually found a home where she’s being treated like royalty!

Costs of treatments - $2,000

Kota , a 4-year-old male tabby came to us as a feral cat with a broken lower jaw. In most shelters, a feral cat with this injury may never be treated or ever put up for adoption. However, we give every treatable animal every chance to recover and find a home! Feral cats often take time to become socialized, but our staff has years of experience in this area.

We anesthetized Kota and placed a strong suture around his jaw to stabilize the fracture so it could heal properly. We also neutered him, gave him an ear tip (standard procedure for feral cats to prove their fixed), and tested him for FIV and FeLV, for which he was negative. Then, we just waited for him to heal.

In a few weeks we noticed that not only was his jaw healing, but he had also developed a fondness for humans! Kota was no longer “feral,” he wanted to be a house pet!

Costs of fixing and broken jaw and additional care for Kota - $1,500

Winx is a 2-year-old female calico brought to us by the County Animal Control Officer. Winx was removed from her home because the owner was not providing medical care for the cat after she developed a grotesquely enlarged eyeball.
In our care, Winx was able to have her damaged eyeball removed and sent for testing to ensure it was not cancerous.

We were overjoyed when the results came back negative. We were able to put Winx up for adoption after healing and she found a wonderful new home!

Costs of surgery for Winx - $1,500

Thank you for your continued support that allows us to save lives and find the animals in our care forever-homes.
Graze is a dapper, 1.5-year-old, male German Shepherd mix. He came to us from animal control after being found with a gun shot wound to the face! Luckily, he only suffered superficial injuries and could be treated easily with pain medications and antibiotics.
Graze went on to make a full recovery and was adopted to a great new home!

Cost of Graze's Medical Care - $500

PorkChop is a 6 -year-old calico female who was abandoned outside a veterinary clinic and brought to OPHS. This poor gal was really thin with lots of hair missing on her belly. We did blood work to see if anything was amiss and discovered her thyroid levels were low, which is rare and often indicative of a chronic illness. We further tested PorkChop and discovered she had hypothyroidism!  Our vet started her on thyroid supplements and ongoing medication. PorkChop currently resides in Kitty City where she will be monitored and treated for her life-long illness.

Brrr, a male domestic long-hair cat, was brought into OPHS when a staff member found nearly frozen to death. He was VERY skinny and very badly matted. This was a neighborhood feral. In his condition, he couldn’t run away, so we were able to capture him and bring him in for treatment.
We started by warming Brrr up, shaving his matted hair, and giving him fluids. He began to make a good recovery and became healthy enough for his neuter surgery. Unfortunately, he had one scarred eye that needed to be removed. He was also tested FIV positive.

Since his health was stable, we were able to complete his needed surgeries and find him a new home. Luckily, Brrr will never have to be on his own and fend for himself ever again!

Cost of Brrr's Medical Care - $1,500

Edward , a 9-year-old male Shih Tzu, was rescued from a high-kill shelter in California. He was transported to OPHS to save his life and find him a new home!

He was in rough shape when he arrived, but recovered well with the help of a wonderful foster home. Unfortunately, Edward developed a urinary track irritation and infection and we needed to take him in for imaging. Luckily, there were no kidney stones and we started him on medication to help him feel better! Now he is one happy, adopted guy.

Cost of Edward's Medical Care - $400

Fanny's before and after picture
Fanny came to us as a stray found on highway 101 near the border with Jefferson county. This poor gal came to us with 50% of her hair gone. In fact, we named her Fanny because of her bare behind! Her nails were overgrown and she was generally in bad shape, acting down and defeated.

Fanny’s road to health wasn’t a simple one. The normal routine of antibiotics, medicated baths, and special food wasn’t working. In fact, the flakiness of her skin was almost getting worse! We took biopsies of her skin and extra diagnostics, however,we still didn’t get a real answer as to the cause.

We finally decided to try a course of steroids to see if that would help her skin recover, and it started working! Then, she was lucky enough to find a foster home to stay in while she recovered, and that helped her even more!

After a few weeks of a new medicine and a foster home, Fanny’s foster mom decided Fanny was too fabulous to let go, so she decided to adopt her!

Costs of Fanny's bloodwork, biopsies, medications, medicated shampoo - $800

DAAB (“Dry As A Bone”), a 4-year-old snowshoe Siamese male, came to us as an injured stray. He was very skinny and VERY dehydrated, hence the name, DAAB.  DAAB received intense fluid therapy and supportive care. His bloodwork was concerning as his kidneys were greatly injured and very “angry”.  He had ulcers in his mouth that made it painful for him to chew food, so we fed him slurries we made out of canned food. (The above picture shows some leftovers on his face!)

It was unclear if DAAB would pull though. After many staff-hours of administering fluids and medications, fixing him drinkable meals and keeping him happy and comfortable, his kidney healed.

Eventually, DAAB became healthy enough that he could be neutered. It was a momentous day because we knew he would finally be able to go up for adoption and find a new home!

DAAB's treatment costs - $1,200

Haywood , this 2-year-old brown tabby was originally brought to us after being found under some bales of hay. He was emaciated, dehydrated, had an upper respiratory infection and his feet were swollen and painful.

Right away we began supportive care with fluid administration and other medications. He began to slowly recover, but we noticed his eyelids still remained rolled inward which irritated his eyes. This condition is called entropion and surgery was in order to correct the condition.

Costs of an entropion in a cat - $1,200

Grace before and after treatments

Grace - This 5-year-old female black lab came to us through our county animal control officer. She had some bad allergies and terrible skin infections. Grace’s road to recovery was a long and winding one as we had to determine what would work for her and what would kickstart her body to grow her hair back.

It took months of food trials and shampoos, but we finally we found the right combination that stopped the allergy cycle and allowed Grace to grow her hair again!

Cost of Grace's Medical Care - $800
