Employment Diversity in Highway Construction (EDHC)

February 26 - March 26, Mondays 4:30-6:30pm in Middlebury
This course will help build the skills of those working in or entering the construction field by teaching how to interpret common construction drawings including site and building plans, elevations, sections, mechanical drawings and schematics, exploded views, and specification documents. Emphasis will be placed on understanding construction documents in the applications that individual students encounter them. Includes architect's scale and reference guide.

Take-Offs and Estimating - Hannaford Career Center
March 26 - April 9, Mondays 4:30-6:30pm in Middlebury.
- Learn about available tools for estimating including the Construction Master, vendor apps, and others.
- Develop good estimating skills including consistency and documentation.
- Create an accurate estimate quickly.
- Learn how to avoid the common mistakes in estimating and quantity takeoffs.

Intro to Residential Construction - Hannaford Career Center
Feb 13 - April 3, Tuesdays 5-7pm in Middlebury
This class is intended to build participants' knowledge of basic construction for employment, self-reliance, or communicating with construction professionals. Two hour sessions will be divided between class time and shop time. No prior experience necessary, but ability to read a tape measure is helpful. Work shoes and long pants required. Topics covered include:
- Carpentry and light construction vocabulary
- Hand and power tool use and safety
- Intro to scale drawings and blueprints
- Basic framing including floor, wall, door, window, rafter, & roof layouts
- Familiarity with construction and job site math

Qualified Signal Person & Basic Rigging -
New England Crane School
March 12th, 8am - 4pm in Burlington
This is a full-day class which meets the requirements of OSHA's 2010 standard for third-party qualification. Participants must pass a written and practical signal test, and a written rigging test in order to receive their certification card.

Mobile Crane/Boom Truck Training,
New England Crane School
March 13-16, 8am - 4pm in Burlington
This is a four day classroom training for people with some experience operating a crane. Candidates who are successful on the written and practical exam will earn NCCER certification. Students have an option of attending the Qualified Signal Person and Basic Rigging course (see above) for no additional cost.

This half-day course meets the OSHA First Aid Standard requirement to have trained first-aid providers at all workplaces of any size if there is no infirmary, clinic or hospital new the proximity of the workplace.

CDL Training
We offer funding (up to $1,500) for women and minorities interested in pursuing their Commercial Drivers License. Training is offered through the six state-approved Commercial Driver Training Schools. Applicants must be 18 years old and have a valid, Vermont drivers license.
