No doubt as the observant Ballstonian that you are, you've noticed there have been big changes on I-66. No longer do you need to reroute your weekday commute around the major thoroughfare. The 10-mile stretch of interstate, formerly an exclusive HOV road during commuter rush hours, is now open as a toll road for single drivers.
Between the hours of 5:30-9:30 am and 3-7 pm, single drivers will be billed via E-ZPass. Prices for your commute will vary depending on the distance you need to drive. The opening of 66 is a great way to save time, but be prepared to pay for the privilege. Fares have been seen as high as $40 in the first few days of operation, and chances of prices going down seem slim. There is good news though. Cars with two or more riders will still be able to drive this prime stretch of interstate for free with an E-ZPass Flex. So, grab your friends and neighbors and set up a carpool; the more the merrier!
If you do decide to drive solo, you can check your fares before entering the toll zone. A mobile app, 66 Express Lanes, is also available on App Store and Google Play.
