Greetings!

ICCE REGIONAL MEETINGS

Thank you to those of you who have been able to host a regional meeting. A great number of regional meetings have been held the past couple of months and we continue to hear what value these meetings are to all of our members. Regional meetings are a great way to discuss issues that pertain to your region, chamber, along with receiving an update on ICCE.

As the end of the year is approaching, please try to schedule your regional meetings for 2018. Forward those dates to Shar Pardubsky, ICCE Executive Director, and they will be added to ICCE’s web page and Chambermaster calendars.

One of the discussions the ICCE board had at their strategic planning meeting in November was how we could add more value to regional meetings. After a great deal of discussion it was decided to: 1) set a customized agenda to fit all regional meetings; 2) engage your state legislator(s) to attend at least one regional meeting throughout the year to give a legislative update; 3) always add to the agenda what is important to your region.

APPLY FOR CCE DESIGNATION BY JANUARY 8

Applications are now open for the designation of Certified Chamber Executive (CCE) through the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives. The CCE program is designed to assess the applicant’s knowledge of the four core chamber management areas: management, planning and development, membership and communications, and operations. Those who complete this designation join a select group of 500 chamber executives throughout the country, propelling you to the top of the field. CCE is recognized by many as the highest, and most elite, professional designation in the chamber of commerce profession. It is the only globally-recognized certification program exclusive to the chamber of commerce industry. I have received my CCE designation, and I highly recommend going through the process.

If you are considering applying, this is the year to do it. The Class of 2018 will be recognized at the ACCE Annual Convention, which comes to Greater Des Moines (DSM) July 17 through 20 at the Iowa Events Center. This is a great opportunity to showcase your chamber and our state in front of a national audience of industry leaders.

Applications for the CCE class of 2018 are due on January 8, 2018 . More information about the program can be found on the ACCE website by clicking the button below.
MOST IOWA WAGES HAVE STAGNATED. BUT THE RICH KEEP GETTING RICHER.

When her coworkers ask her to join them for a lunch out, Katelyn Hobin often declines, choosing to pinch pennies where she can.

A Des Moines social worker, Hobin never expected to be rich: She earned a liberal arts degree from a private college and entered a notoriously low-paying profession.
But she also never expected to find herself here.

At 32, she's still paying off student loans. Both she and her husband, Grant, a teacher, have part-time jobs in addition to their full-time careers. They've put off buying a home, electing to rent a duplex instead. And they have postponed having children until they feel more financially secure.
MEREDITH: TIME INC. PURCHASE WILL BRING 'SIZABLE CHUNK' OF JOBS TO DES MOINES

Meredith CEO Steve Lacy received several emails Monday morning with the same message: Third time's the charm.

After two failed rounds of talks, the Des Moines-based publishing company pulled off the monumental purchase Sunday of Time Inc., a publishing powerhouse that includes titles such as Time, Sports Illustrated, People, Fortune and Money.

Though net job losses are likely, Lacy said the nearly $3 billion deal will mean more jobs will come to Des Moines.
IOWA CHAMBER ALLIANCE TO SEEK TAX REFORM

The Iowa Chamber Alliance will be pushing for tax reform during the coming legislative session, with an eye to eliminating federal deductibility and reducing both personal and corporate tax rates. The alliance, which represents Iowa's 16 largest chambers of commerce, on Wednesday discussed its legislative priorities at a press conference and during a meeting with the Des Moines Register's editorial
DOWDUPONT PLANT'S CLOSURE FELT AROUND THE REGION

DowDuPont’s $225 million cellulosic ethanol plant remains mostly empty weeks after the chemicals giant shut down the plant. The company’s departure from the region was sudden and swift, but the long-term implications reach across the region, from the bottom lines of farmers hoping to diversify their income to the Nevada city budget.
