Local Heroes
Honored at Dinner

Last Saturday we had the pleasure of celebrating and honoring our 2017 "Local Heroes" with a four course Farm-to-Table dinner prepared by the masterful Chef Jeremy Bialker of Two Rivers Brewing Company. The Local Heroes Dinner was the culmination of our season-long rewards card program, and these super shoppers achieved the goal of attending 24 or more market days throughout the season. Over the course of the season we also gave out 35 prizes in the rewards card monthly drawing. We're thankful to all who support the Market each and every week and we're looking forward to running the rewards card program again in 2018!

BIG NEWS!
Award Winning Heirloom Seeds for Sale on Seed Savers Exchange!

This is just way too exciting! "Salvaterra's Select" seeds are now available for purchase in the Seed Savers Exchange catalog. Here's the exact entry from the catalog:

Winner of our 2017 Tomato Tasting - Paste/ Sauce division. The great meaty texture is paired with tangy, sweet flavor that make it an ideal sauce tomato. Fruits measure 2½-3¾". At Seed Savers Exchange (zone 4B), it was a bit later maturing but had above average productivity. Grown by Charles Salvaterra since the early 1980s, this heirloom tomato has been shared within the Hazleton, Pennsylvania community since the 1950s. Indeterminate, 70-80 days from transplant.

Cooking with the Seasons:
Turnip & Potato Patties

Not sure what to do with those turnips you see at Salvaterra's Gardens? Try combining them with potatoes from Scholl Orchards and making these yummy (and easy) fritters. They're a great (and slightly sneaky) way to get more veggies into your kids! FYI: Turnips  are a good source of phosphorus, potassium and manganese and eating turnips with other foods that contain complementary amino acid profiles may make them a more complete protein source.
