New FAQ: Alcohol and Cancer
Our latest awareness-raising tool tackles common questions
Did you know
Wisconsin ranks 3rd
in the nation for heavy drinking and binge drinking among adults?
Most of us know heavy drinking isn't great for our health -- but what many people do not know is that alcohol use can cause cancer.
Today, we are excited to release our latest tool, the Alcohol & Cancer FAQ, designed to help WI Cancer Council members raise awareness about this critical connection.
We asked for your questions related to alcohol and cancer risk. And now we've answered.
The Alcohol & Cancer FAQ answers 10 common questions such as, "How much do I need to drink to raise my cancer risk?" and "Does the type of alcohol I drink matter?"
As a downloadable PDF, this resource is perfect for sharing with patients, community members, and other constituencies. In the coming months, we'll be customizing the FAQ to meet the needs of specific populations.
"More people are learning about the connection between alcohol and cancer risk," said Courtney Harris, policy coordinator for the WI Comprehensive Cancer Control Program. "As awareness grows, the potential for pushback grows, too."
To address this pushback, the
Alcohol & Cancer FAQ arms WI Cancer Council members with straightforward answers to frequently asked questions that may arise in your communities.
The Alcohol & Cancer FAQ is the first resource developed explicitly for the WI Cancer Council's Alcohol and Cancer Risk Action Plan. This issue has long been monitored by the WI Cancer Council's Policy Committee, and the new FAQ builds upon excellent resources already available - such as the WI Cancer Council's
Alcohol Infographic and the groundbreaking
ASCO Alcohol Statement released late last year.

Action Plans

Registration is free and open to existing and prospective members alike. We encourage you to invite a colleague or friend to join you -- you can use the "send to a colleague" button below, or watch for our special shareable invitation later this month. This is an excellent way to help prospective members see the Council's great work in action.

Late last month, Cancer Council members came together for a webinar series to review our draft
Action Plans and share their feedback.
Thank you
to all who joined us!
As a quick reminder, the WI Cancer Council's
Action Plans are:
- increasing awareness about alcohol and cancer risk;
- increasing HPV vaccine completion;
- increasing cancer screening rates; and
- increasing access to quality cancer care and services.
Each webinar tackled a different
Action Plan area and allowed members to ask questions and share ideas and resources. We will begin assembling resources, background data, and links to each webinar in plan-specific pages online. These pages will act as a clearinghouse for all the ideas and materials generated throughout each Action Plan's lifecycle. Watch upcoming email announcements for links to the pages. The Wisconsin Partnership Program at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health supports community-driven work to advance health equity. The program is currently seeking applicants for the 2018
Community Impact Grants program
.
The grants program advances health equity in Wisconsin communities through support for large-scale, evidence-informed, community-academic partnership initiatives that address the social determinants of health. These partnerships require substantial and authentic community involvement to achieve sustained policy, systems, and environmental change, and must be supported by robust evaluation.
Each award is for a maximum of $1 million over a period of up to five years.

The Wisconsin Cancer Data Bulletin: Cervical Cancer in Wisconsin
has been updated with the most recent data (2015). This updated bulletin presents the most current cervical cancer incidence and mortality trends, and highlights disparities in race/ethnic and age groups in Wisconsin. It also includes resources for more information and general assistance in accessing preventive health programs.

Comprehensive Study Shows E-Cigs May Lead Youth to Start Smoking
From the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids
A
comprehensive report on electronic cigarettes issued by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
finds that, while smokers who switch completely to e-cigarettes are exposed to lower levels of toxic substances, little is known about the long-term health effects of e-cigarette use and there is only "limited evidence that e-cigarettes may be effective aids to promote smoking cessation." The report raises serious concerns because it finds there is "substantial evidence that e-cigarette use increases risk of ever using combustible tobacco cigarettes among youth and young adults."
E-cigarettes have been on the market for a decade and are used by millions of kids and adults. This report underscores the need for FDA regulation of e-cigarettes in order to prevent undermining decades of progress in reducing youth smoking, and to assess which, if any, e-cigarettes are effective at helping smokers quit all tobacco products or switch completely away from cigarettes.
