A new year brings bigger and better opportunities, Nevada Statewide Maternal and Child Health Coalition is now releasing our very own podcast series. 

Our first podcast featured Gabrielle Kaufman, MA, LPCC, BC-MDT. Gabrielle is a dance/movement therapist and licensed professional clinical counselor with over 20 years experience in the helping profession. She is currently the director of Training and Technical Assistance for Maternal Mental Health Now. She has ran several programs for high-risk children and teens, taught classes to parents of newborns and toddlers, and runs support groups for single parents and women with postpartum depression. Gabrielle has spoken widely, published articles on parenting, and served as editor for Bringing Light to Motherhood.  It will be in our next e-newsletter as well as on our NVMCH website.

Health Care Shortages in Nevada

Nevada has severe provider shortages in primary care, dental, and mental health care. The Primary Care Office (PCO) is federally funded to identify and quantify these shortages in Nevada. In this webinar, Scott Jones, the manager of the Primary Care Office (PCO), will review data from the PCO of statewide health professional shortages in primary care, dental, and mental health services. He will also review collaborative efforts, initiatives, and programs that support reducing these shortages by supporting recruitment and retention of providers in underserved areas. 

As manager, Scott Jones supervises state activities for federal designation of Health Professional Shortage Areas, state activities relating to the Nevada J-1 Physician Visa Waiver Program, and outreach activities for federal health provider loan repayment programs. He has a PhD in microbiology and immunology and studied the molecular biology of Hepatitis B Virus during his graduate work prior to his work in the state of Nevada.

Preconception collaborative Improvement and Innovation Network (CoIIn)

This Preconception CoIIN brings together four states- California, Delaware, North Carolina, and Oklahoma- as well as numerous partners and subject matter experts, to develop, implement, and disseminate a woman-centered, clinician-engaged, community involved approach to the well-woman visit to improve the preconception health status of women of reproductive age, particularly low-income women and women of color. The four states will develop human-centered designed, adaptable models to effectively integrate preconception care into the well woman visit by 1) working with clinics, consumers and communities to implement validated screening tool(s) and response strategies, 2) enhancing state-level capacity to support effective implementation, and 3) disseminating strategies and successful models nationally.

A Mom with Postpartum Depression Asked for Help. Her Nurse Called the Cops

It's every mom with postpartum depression's worst nightmare: seeking help only to have children's aid called, or worse, the cops. Jessica Porten of Sacramento, California experienced just that. She went in for her first OB appointment since giving birth 4 months prior. She spoke to a nurse practitioner about having postpartum depression and expressed interest in discussing her medication options. Instead of getting resources and the help she was seeking, cops were called and she was escorted to the ER and later discharged with nothing but printouts of possible resources. 


The Afterglow PMADs Support Group Training 
Available in Las Vegas and Reno

Ashley Hanna Morgan will be facilitating a training that discusses the facts and research surrounding PMADs in moms and dads, going over group theory and dynamics, and using her curriculum as a guide:  The Afterglow: A Perinatal Mood & Anxiety Disorder Support Group Curriculum. While all parents need support, this group is designed specifically for parents who experience anything that falls under Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorder (PMAD), such as Perinatal or Postpartum Depression (PPD) or Prenatal or Postpartum Anxiety (PPA), anxiety, OCD, or PTSD. Whether you're a licensed mental health clinician, a nurse, a doula, a mid-wife, a lactation consultant, a grandparent, a rabbi, a pastor, or a parent who has fully recovered from a PMAD, you're qualified to lead a support group with a curriculum like this one to guide you. A good rule of thumb is to have been in recovery for at least one year before facilitating a support group for others.
