State Budget Picture Further Complicates 2018 Session
On Dec. 5, Minnesota Management and Budget, the state's fiscal agency, revealed its November economic forecast, which predicts a $188 million budget deficit in the 2018-2019 biennial budget and a deficit of $586 million in 2020-2021. Read more here.
State Releases New Opioid Prescribing Guidelines
On Dec. 1, the governor's office announced new guidelines developed by the Department of Human Services' Opioid Prescribing Work Group, intended to help physicians and other health care providers decide when to prescribe opioids, how much to prescribe, and how to monitor their use. Read more here
Grant to MMA Will Support New Vision for Quality Measurement
The MMA has received a 13-month grant from the COPIC Medical Foundation to support the MMA's efforts to streamline and simplify quality measurement. The MMA will work to develop a physician-consensus core measure set, and use it to influence the measures used as part of the state's mandated quality measurement of physician practices, as well as the measures selected by MN Community Measurement. Call for Submissions: Medical students, Residents and Fellows
Minnesota Medicine is inviting medical students, residents and fellows to submit abstracts of original research or clinical vignettes by Feb. 28, 2018. The submissions demonstrating appropriate quality will be selected for publication in the magazine and authors will be invited to present their work in a poster session at the MMA's 2018 Annual Conference in St. Paul. Submissions should be no longer than 500 words plus references. Research abstracts should include a brief description of the research problem, methodology and results, and a discussion of the findings. Clinical vignettes should include a description of the case, the diagnosis and treatment approach, and a discussion of the implications of the case. Submit your abstracts and vignettes here. Minnesota Wild Salutes Health Care Professionals Dec. 14
The Minnesota Wild will hold its first annual "Salute 2 Scrubs" Appreciation Game on Dec. 14 at 7 p.m. at Xcel Energy Center. The event is to honor and recognize all health care professionals in Minnesota. With each ticket purchased, attendees will receive a special t-shirt. The home team faces off against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Click here for details.
