Palm Beach Post: Park Educator Awarded for Showing Teachers How Students Learn Outside

Palm Beach Post The top educator at Palm Beach County's only state park is getting statewide recognition for her work getting other teachers comfortable taking their students outside to learn.

Veronica Frehm, the director of education at MacArthur Beach State Park, is the Florida Project Learning Tree 2017 Facilitator of the Year. As a Project Learning Tree facilitator, she puts on workshops for teachers each year to acclimate them to the outdoors so they can improve their students' learning.

"The educators that come to my workshops are incredible, wanting to learn more about our ecosystems that we have in our backyard," Frehm said in a news release. "It is an honor to receive this award, but the honor is truly mine to be able to be a part of this amazing program and be able to share it with so many."

Paul Strauss, the District's Director of Environmental and Conservation Services, nominated Frehm for the award after participating in a workshop.

"She strives to bring the topics to life by finding real-world examples to the concepts outlined in Project Learning Tree guides. I am beyond impressed with her knowledge of the program and her innovative approach to teaching Project Learning Tree principles."

Teachers who spend three days of their summer vacation at the park for professional development earn the ability to come back during the school year with their students for a MacBeach Day. The students get to wade into the estuary, where they scoop up creatures in a net for examination and get a close-up look at the mangroves. Learn more...

From meeting with their partner teachers to finalize lesson plans, to participating in duty stations and assisting with small group instruction, District leaders appreciated the opportunity to #TeachPalmBeach for the day.

"Tomorrow 65-70 senior staff members will be teaching in classrooms across PBCSD," Superintendent Avossa shared on Twitter. "I've received my lesson plans - emailed back and forth - I'm ready for my first full day in a classroom in a LONG time. I want senior staff to see what it's like [during] "A Day in the Life of a Teacher."

Thanks to changes to the Florida statute, School District of Palm Beach County high school teachers stand to earn just over $500,000 more for their students' success.

In the upcoming fiscal year, teachers will see increased bonuses for student achievement on Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB) and Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE) tests.

House Bill 7069, passed during the 2017 legislative session, eliminated the maximum bonus amounts.

AP/IB/AICE teacher bonuses are no longer capped at the $2,000 or $3,000 maximum amounts based on school grade and passing rates.
