Annual IACUC Regional Education Conference  
February 27, 2018 

This leading regional conference is designed by volunteers in the field who passionately care about the ethical use of animals in research.  Content will meet the needs of both new and experienced practitioners. We are proud to offer this long-standing conference on February 27, 2018 at the Lynnwood Convention Center in Lynnwood, WA just north of Seattle.

NWABR's Approach to Reduce Polarizing Conflict

You can't observe the news today without being drawn into endless partisan conflict.  Every issue is black or white. You are either for or against. The world is a litany of "us and them."

These headlines hook us in for their sensational conflict but make terrible policy, attitudes and relationships.  Terrible because the world is not a series of binary choices where you are one thing or another; strictly believe one thing or another.

At NWABR we know that to build trust in the work of biomedical research (and in everything else for that matter) we need to strive to increase Directional Thinking.  Directional Thinking is a deliberate way of thinking that embraces the nuance in all topics.  Some people have referred to Directional Thinking as embracing the gray.  That is, acknowledging the clear presence of black and white arguments and all the shades of gray that also exist between the two poles.

NWABR aims to connect, inform and strengthen biomedical research through the use of Directional Thinking.  We encourage people to thoughtfully approach topics laden with conflict.  When we talk about research we often hear ourselves saying, "well, that depends," because in our view answers change depending on stakeholders and even small conditional differences; there is seldom just one right answer.
 
Our recent Community Conversation in Spokane, "What's in our water, who decides and why" is a good example of how encouraging Directional Thinking plays a role in biomedical issues that affect communities.

We will present Directional Thinking as part of our poster at the upcoming ScienceTalk conference in Portland on March 1 & 2.  Come say "hi" if you attend. 









Join us in welcoming new members Montana State University and Oregon State University

We are thrilled to welcome returning NWABR members MSU and OSU. MSU is located in Bozeman, MT, home of the Bobcats.  It is a top tier research university and is celebrating its 125th year in 2018.  OSU is located in Corvallis, OR and is home to the Beavers.  Also a highly ranked research university, OSU celebrates its 150th year. We are confident they will reflect and contribute to our shared efforts in biomedical research.

In addition to networking and learning with a few hundred other folks about science communication, on March 1, Ken and Jen will present a poster at ScienceTalk18 in Portland, OR.  If you're attending too, come and talk with us at the poster session about our community engagement work!

If you're not attending, you should!  This conference will strengthen your science communication skills with non-scientists and those outside your discipline.  Remember that if you don't take the chance to share your work with others, who else will?
