Student Spotlights
Meet Ryan Trout & Ihuoma Emenuga!

This issue's Student Spotlights features two Baltimore campus students who also work for the City of Baltimore: third year Ryan Trout, a Legislative Liaison and Public Information Officer for the Department of General Services and first year Ihuoma Emengua, the Medical Director for the Bureau of School Health.

Ryan, who is also earning his Master of Public Policy, is running for the Maryland House of Delegates. Ihuoma who already has a MPH and MD is pursuing a MBA to better understand ways to curb rising health care costs without compromising certain aspects of patient care.

How do these two students serve the City of Baltimore? 
Why is Ryan running for public office and what are some of his favorite local destinations in Maryland? What have been Ihoma's most eye opening classes so far during her MBA journey and from which international universities did she earn her previous degrees?  Check out our blog to find out!

4th Annual Emerging Markets Case Competition

The Emerging Markets Case Competition is an opportunity for MBA students interested in global business strategies, focusing on emerging markets and social impact, to address challenges in emerging markets through real case studies. Teams from top MBA programs will compete by providing a set of recommendations to an unpublished case challenge that will be judged by a panel of corporate executives and international development professionals. Student teams will be evaluated on the critical issues of the case, the quality of their analysis, the feasibility of their recommendations, and their overall delivery and ability to navigate the question and answer session.

First and second place winning teams will be awarded monetary prizes of $2,500 and $1,500 respectively and other prizes for best presenter, etc.

On Tuesday, February 13 we welcome Fabiana Feld, Chief Investment Officer in the Global Agribusiness and Forestry Department of International Finance Corporation (IFC). With over twenty years' experience in the emerging markets, Fabiana's work in the Agribusiness space has prioritized  water/land and agriculture, small holder solutions and animal protein. This work includes assessing the various kinds of risks associated with companies in agribusiness - including climatic, political and economic. Join us as we invite Fabiana to discuss the impact investing space, the role risk plays within impact investing, the various points of entry into the field, and current developments both locally and globally. Deloitte Annual UMD MBA Case Competition
Save the Date, Registration opens February 23rd!

Save the Date for the Deloitte Consulting & University of Maryland Annual UMD MBA Case Competition. Open to all full and part time MBA students at the Smith School. The case competition will give you an opportunity to analyze complex issues faced by Deloitte's clients and to present a solution to experienced Deloitte practitioners.

March 28th - Competition Kickoff
April 13th - Case Competition @ Deloitte's Rosslyn, VA Office

This will provide students with the chance to practice problem-solving with unique, real-world challenges. You'll be able to build your network and compete for a chance to have dinner with Deloitte leadership.
