Let's start talking about New Year's Resolutions now.  2018 will be here before we know it!

As our name suggests, The Prepared Senior eNewsletter is all about being prepared for "senior-hood". This means knowing about senior resources and services before you need them. This eNews Review is devoted to some of the educational websites from the government and non-profits that help one be a prepared senior. This topic will be continued and expanded on in the January 2018 eNewsletter.

Part 1
Senior Resources and Services You Should Know About

Eldercare Locator
This group will help you find your local Area Agency on Aging.
(See the next paragraph for information on your local Area Agency on Aging).
Call the Eldercare Locator at 1-800-677-1116, Monday through Friday, 9AM to 8PM eastern time. You will be connected to a professional that will help you find your local Area Agency on Aging (AAA). The Eldercare.gov website also has a searchable database that lists information about the different types of senior resources. It is not a searchable database but instead a list of categories of senior resources.
Website:  www.Eldercare.gov/

Area Agencies on Aging (AAAs)
Area Agencies on Aging (AAAs) were established under the Older Americans Act (OAA) in 1973 to respond to the needs of Americans 60 and over in every local community across the U.S. Most Area Agencies on Aging serve a specific geographic area of several neighboring counties in one state. More specifically a local Area Agency on Aging, coordinates and offers services that help older adults remain in their homes aided by services such as Meals-on-Wheels and referrals to homemaker assistance. Some Area Agencies on Aging offer sliding scale Care Management and other senior service referrals to local non-profits.
To find your local Area Agency on Aging, call the Eldercare Locator at 1-800-677-1116, Monday through Friday, 9AM to 8PM eastern time.

Aging and Disability Resource Centers (ADRCs)
Aging and Disability Resource Centers (ADRCs) seek to address the frustrations many older adults, people with disabilities, and family members experience when trying to learn about and access long-term services and supports. ADRCs are an important part of the No Wrong Door (NWD) system model. A collaboration between the Administration for Community Living (ACL), the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), and the Veterans Health Administration (VA), all work together to streamline access to long-term services and supports for older adults, people with disabilities, and their families.
To locate an Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC), call the Eldercare Locator at 1-800-677-1116, Monday through Friday, 9AM to 8PM eastern time.

Medicare and Medicaid are under The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS)
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is part of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). This group administers Medicare, Medicaid, the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), and the Health Insurance Marketplace.

One of the most important details that the prepared senior needs to know about Medicare, is that Medicare is basically health insurance and it does not pay for long term assisted living or skilled nursing care. A good place to learn more about options and signup deadlines with Medicare is with your  State Health Insurance Assistance Programs (SHIPs) - see below.

State Health Insurance Assistance Programs (SHIPs)
State Health Insurance Assistance Programs (SHIPs) provide free, in depth, one-on-one insurance counseling and assistance to Medicare beneficiaries, their families, friends, and caregivers. SHIPs operate in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and are grant-funded projects of the federal U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), U.S. Administration for Community Living (ACL).

Administration for Community Living (ACL)
The Administration for Community Living (ACL) was created around the fundamental principle that older adults and people with disabilities of all ages should be able to live where they choose, with the people they choose, and with the ability to participate fully in their communities. The ACL awards grants to states and organizations, which in turn provide services and support, to older adults and people with disabilities, conduct research, and develop innovative approaches to doing both.
