Thank you to everyone that came out for our STEAM Night last week. In this issue you will find a few pictures that capture the success of the evening, but you really had to be present to appreciate the time and energy the students' put forth. I compliment our Knights and their teachers on their fine work - truly outstanding.

As I noted in last week's issue, this is the time of year with many special school events as we are in the holiday season and only have nine school days remaining in the first semester. If you look at the calendar below we have something on the docket that makes for a fun evening out for most any member of our school community. Please select one of these seasonal events for your family!

This Tuesday evening is also our monthly SAC meeting. These are open to all our Knight families and school partners as we continue to review our school improvement plan and other current items.

Good luck to our boys volleyball team Monday as they have made it to the semi-finals and will go up against a tough team from Blanker. They are well coached and have practiced hard to get to this point - I am confident they will do very well. Go Knights!

Have a great week and I hope to see you at one of our school events in the coming days.

In Knights Honor,

Stephanie R. Jackson, M. Ed.
Principal, Lake Nona Middle School

Knight Sports

Volleyball
This past week our volleyball teams each played two very intense playoff games. On Monday we were fortunate to host both our girls and boys games. Our Knights did not let us down! The Lady Knights came out firing against Odyssey and had tremendous defensive play by Kate Satterfield who finished the night with a season high of 3 blocks! Our Lady Knights ended the game in just 2 sets! The boys game against Bridgewater Middle was a little more intense with the crowd getting involved because of some missed calls. The momentum of the game began to shift, but our boys team showed composure and maturity as they finished off the first set. The second set was ours from start to finish and our Knights laid claim to their spot in the quarter finals.

Lady Knights

2017 Lake Nona Middle Girls Volleyball Team

The lead up to Wednesday's games was much different, with tension rising high and suspense building up for both teams in anticipation of their quarterfinal games. Come playoffs, it's single elimination. The Lady Knights traveled to Maitland to face the number one seeded team in the County. Seeding isn't always everything, however word around town was this Maitland team was "stacked." As expected, our girls came out playing hard and battled point for point against a very strong opponent. Unfortunately, they lost the 1st set by a close margin. Coach Vazquez kept his team's morale up and our girls came out competing in the 2nd set. At one point the score was close at 17-20, but our ladies were not able to beat them to 25. The final scores were 21-25 and 20-25. Our girls played the best they have played all season and to no surprise left everything they had out on the court; which made for an extremely heart breaking loss. Our Lady Knights ended the season 7-2. That's a winning season if you ask you me! Congratulations on a great season Coach Vazquez and our Lady Knights!

Boys Team
This year's boys volleyball team continues to be the team to beat in the county! They are an extremely talented well rounded group of young boys, that really have a grasp for the game of volleyball. We didn't know what to expect going into this quarterfinal game and were ready for anything coming our way, as Timber Springs is a first year school, and also a relief school for our rival, Avalon. Our boys started off with a good lead in the first set and closed it out at 25-11, never letting them into the game. The second set was a little closer as Timber Springs was not backing down, but our boys caught their momentum once again and finished KNIGHT STRONG! We are now advancing to the Final 4!

Key players and leaders for our Knights: Jariel Giraud, Alex Castro, Sebastian Urbina, and Amiel Bagay Liberos and defensive specialists: Antonio Medina and Cesar Yanez.

The Knights will be playing Blankner, a number 3 seed, at home on Monday, December 11th. Game time is 5:30 pm! Please come out and support your Knights! This is one game you don't want to miss!

Golf
Eight Lake Nona Middle School students were selected for free golf lessons at the Eagle Creek Golfing Academy: Landon Peterson, Chandar Greene, Dylan Jones, Royce Teague, Charles Gilmore- Kathleen Osne, Treagan Madison and Angelina Scott.  Students started the week of December 2.

STEAM Knight
STEAM Night was last week, thank you to all the participants!

Today's job market is very competitive and increasingly so. Applicants significantly outnumber the available jobs. However, companies in the fields of science, technology, and engineering are actually struggling to find skilled workers and are looking abroad to recruit the expertise they need.

It is crucial that students develop the foundational knowledge and skills necessary to pursue whatever career path they desire. The school schedule must reflect the importance of science, engineering, and technology or we will limit our students' options for their future.

The STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art as design, and mathematics) fair is a natural setting to promote learning of important academic content and to support student development of 21st century skills, such as critical thinking and problem solving-skills that are in high demand in today's workforce!

* Our pictures this week reflect a "successful Knight." Thanks to all that supported the STEAM Knight!

REMINDER: Lake Nona Holiday Toy Drive Continues . . .
December 4th to December 20th . . . THANK YOU!

Overview
As you know, the holiday season is upon us and, with that, the giving spirit. SGA is announcing one more drive to end the year. SGA would like to welcome you to the 4th Annual Holiday Toy Drive. Ever since the hurricane, our community has needed our help more and more. The Lake Nona Middle School SGA has teamed up with Three Points Elementary School to help out many of those in need. Three Points Elementary School, which is located near Lee Vista and Goldenrod, is categorized as a Title 1 School.

Sixty Children in Dire Need (Christmas morning is now just 21 days away)
Not only having students already there needing help, Three Points has received many kids from surrounding counties and countries, like Puerto Rico. This toy drive is to help those kids in need and others at that school that are less fortunate. Three Points Elementary has given us a list of about sixty (60) kids that are considered homeless or really have nothing for the holidays. SGA would like to ask for your help in giving them the holiday they never have expected!

Collection Period
The Toy Drive will be held from Monday, December 4th through Wednesday, December 20th, 2017. The Toy Drive will go through all 1st period classes. 1st period classes will collect items, and SGA will collect the items every Tuesday after school. For collection on Tuesdays, all you need to do is place your items outside your door.

First Period Challenge!
To make this more interesting, and to help more of the community, all first period classes will be in competition with each other! The winning class will receive a gourmet breakfast, donated by SGA.
Points will be awarded per item. Weekly updates will be sent out to notify first period classes of their standing. Any first period class can participate, no matter the number of students!
