Answering Questions
Thanks to the parents who attended the information meeting and thanks to those who have asked questions and met with one of the pastors.
One of the questions is about who would ask for sanctuary in a church. The most likely person is someone who has been working with a lawyer, and a legal appeal to prevent deportation is in process or possible. It is a temporary step which may prevent a parent and young children from being separated. The church is acting out of compassion for such a person, not as a political statement. And background checks will always be part of the process of deciding if someone is accepted for sanctuary.
Most of the questions parents ask are the same issues that the Preschool staff members work on as our first priority every day--keeping children safe. Describing the door locking and access to various parts of the building is a little hard to visualize, so please ask for a tour if you would like to see how it works. In regards to safety,
it is important to note that a member of UCP or one of our partner churches will always be in the building, 24/7, day and night.
