Honoring The Life and Legacy of Dr. Joseph L. White
"Father of Black Psychology"
Dec. 19, 1932 - Nov. 21, 2017
Join NYABPsi for a celebration of Kwanzaa in honor of Dr. Joseph L. White, recognized as the "father of Black Psychology". As a founding member of the Association of Black Psychologists in 1968, Dr. White embodied the Kwanzaa principle of Kujichagulia -- self-determination:
"We cannot depend on them to define us. We have to take charge and define ourselves. We need to build our own psychology."
In the spirit of Dr. White, we will reflect on the principle of self-determination and the role that Black psychology plays in problem solving and progressing as a community. Dr. White also contributed to the success of many students of color and received many honors for his work in advancing opportunities for African American students. To honor this commitment, this year's Kwanzaa Celebration will feature Rukiya King, MA (clinical psychology doctoral student at John Jay College) as she presents her collaborative research on:
The psychological impact (trauma) of microaggressions on people of African descent.
