HE. DR NASSER SAIDI ON ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION
Dr. Nasser Saidi, Chairman of the CEBC, contributed an article in the publication The Business Year on the Green Economy. In this article, he emphasized the importance of environmental education for young people, noting the long-term intergenerational change that needs to occur to our thinking. DEWA has partnered with  innogy International to deliver a startup investment and incubator vehicle for a range of disruptive technologies. H.E. Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, managing director and CEO of DEWA and Chairman of innogy IME, and Peter Terium, CEO of innogy SE have endorsed the new strategy for their joint venture company innogy International Middle East (innogy IME). innogy IME has a strong track record of implementing important strategic projects, as well as projects for the region's digital and green economy.  [Read More]

INTERVIEW WITH THOMAS ALTMANN, ACWA POWER
In an interview with MENA CSP KIP, Thomas Altmann, Vice President of Innovation & Technology at  ACWA Power , discusses  whether CSP is the answer to clean water desalination? and explores the opportunities and possibilities of CSP for desalination. He also acknowledges the flexibility that CSP can offer in terms of desalination projects, given the ability of CSP to  produce electricity to run a 24-hour reverse osmosis desalination plant. ENVIROMENA ACQUIRED BY UK INVESTMENT FIRM
U.K.-based investment advisory company, Arjun Infrastructure Partners has agreed to acquire  Enviromena for an undisclosed sum.  This is the first time a regional renewables company has been purchased, which points to a maturing market.  Enviromena CEO, Sami Khoreibi, said the transaction will enable the company to receive crucial strategic support and access to capital from AIP, and that it will strengthen its position in the solar markets of the MENA region. MEMBERS PROJECT UPDATE

ETIHAD ESCO
CEBC Member Etihad ESCO has a number of exciting projects underway. This week begins a series of three updates on their  Dubai International Airport Retrofit Project ,   Dubai Golf Retrofit Project and  Wasl Properties Retrofit Project.

Dubai International Airport Retrofit Project
Etihad ESCO has signed a guaranteed-energy-saving basis agreement with Dubai Airports worth AED 140M for the retrofit of Dubai International Airport Terminals 1, 2, 3, and Concourse B.  The project is expected to help Dubai Airports to save 65.5 GWh of electricity and 21M IG of water annually, helping it slash its annual energy bill by AED 30M and reduce carbon emission by 28,700 tonnes.  Dubai Airports has become the first airport in the GCC, and the second among 56 airports worldwide, to achieve  Level 2 accreditation from the Airports Council International's Airport Carbon Accreditation Programme  in 2016.

EDA INSIGHT: GLOBAL GOVERNANCE OF CARBON CAPTURE AND STORAGE: ROLE FOR THE GCC?
In this EDA Insight, Robin Mills, CEO of Qamar Energy, provides his thoughts on carbon capture and storage in the GCC. He notes that c arbon capture and storage (CCS) is an essential environmental technology, and particularly important for the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries in allowing them to make continuing use of their large oil and gas resources. However, he also notes that  CCS has advanced less than is required to meet global climate goals, and less than other climate-friendly technologies such as renewable energy. [Read Report]

EDA INSIGHT: THE UAE/SAUDI ARABIA-EAST ASIA ENERGY RELATIONS: TOWARDS MORE DYNAMIC AND DIVERSE
In this EDA Insight, Dr Makio Yamada, Research Fellow at the King Faisal Center for Research and Islamic Studies, shares his knowledge on the  UAE/Saudi Arabia-East Asia energy relationship. His paper notes the importance of continued improved relationships between the two regions, but also acknowledges that it would be sensible for the UAE and Saudi Arabia not to only rely on the Chinese market, but also keep pursuing a diversication of their energy-export markets to South and Southeast Asian countries such as India and Indonesia.
