Stallions in the Spotlight

Mrs. Pam Van Arsdale, our Library Media Specialist, participated in the Read with a Stallion program, sharing her favorite story about a librarian to a group of St. Anthony students; how fitting!

We are excited to welcome Roberta Bertolini from Milan, Italy, who will work as assistant teacher, spending time with students as well as the Italian teachers. She was chosen from a list of qualified applicants provided by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Rome to serve as a teacher's assistant to Mrs. Iacobone and Mrs. Steele. She was interviewed and vetted by the Education Office at the Italian Consulate and has obtained a Visa to remain with us until the end of the school year. We are so excited that she will be with us at DeSales and will help to teach and promote the Italian language and culture.

SFD  donated $1,000 to Catholic Charities USA, a Catholic Relief Services sister agency, through our Stallions for Puerto Rico fundraiser. This event would not have been possible without the assistance of our SFD family members, in particular:  Mrs. Aumiller (with the assistance of Mrs. Belt and Ms. Nye) was instrumental with her ideas, buying paint materials, and painting the t-shirts; t he Spanish Honor Society and current Spanish class students took orders during their lunch periods, painted the t-shirts, and packed and delivered them to all the homerooms;  Mrs. Gattis cut all the stencils and donated some t-shirts.; a nd last but not least, all the students and staff who generously supported our cause.

Some of our Student Council leaders visited with the Dominican Sisters of Peace last week, serving as great inspiration and examples of Servant Leaders. They also stopped by to see former faculty member Sister Sharon.

Wow! Eight SFDHS students participated in "National Novel Writing Month." This annual event challenges writers of all ages to write a 50,000 word story by the end of November (only 30 days!).

Several of the art classes went to Winterfair last Friday to see current working artists. They also visited the exhibit at the Canzani Center on the CCAD campus.

Great job to all the performers at our annual Christmas Choir Concert. The beautiful voices from SFD students as well as from St. Anthony and St. Matthias students helped get everyone in the Christmas spirit!

Senior Jasmine Nappier entered her poem "The American Meal" into the Poetry Nation contest and was selected as a semi-finalist, which means she is in the process of being published by Eber and Wein Publishing in the next edition of their anthology entitled "Upon Arrival." It will include poems from 20-25 amateur poets 16 years of age and older. If she advances further, she will have a chance to win $2,000 dollars.

Senior
Jackie Lineberry participated in the Worthington Chorus performance of "Christmas Classics" this past weekend.

Students from Family Homeroom 120, along with the top National Honor Society participants of the Canned Food Drive, dropped off items at the St. James the Less Food Pantry this morning. Thank you to all who donated to this
important service drive.

Members of the Boys Soccer State Championship team were recognized at the Franklin County Board of Commissioners earlier today. The team also marched in the Westerville Christmas Parade last Saturday.

Experienced Plumber for Eco-Friendly Solution

The Environmental Club is seeking a community member who is a qualified plumber willing to donate their time to measure and install new eco-friendly water fountains in the school.

The DeSales Environmental Club earned a grant from the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium and Kroger to replace outdated water fountains with Elkay refillable bottle filling stations. We would greatly appreciate help with installation. Please contact Environment Club Advisor Mrs. Danielle Polemeni at polemeni@desales.co for more information about this project.

Leadership Academy for Business-Minded Juniors

The Leadership Academy at Mercy College is geared towards students who have a passion for business and demonstrated leadership and public speaking skills. The weeklong Academy is held at the Westchester campus on the Hudson River and students visit the Manhattan campus near Times Square as well. Students learn leadership lessons from leaders at top global companies, match a personality assessment to potential careers, and participate in team-building activities. In addition, students visit Fortune 500 companies. Past visits have included Microsoft/LinkedIn, Disney/ESPN, PWC, and MTV, among others.

There is no charge for tuition and students stay in the dorm for free. Students simply need to provide their own transportation to and from campus, as well as a check in the amount of $300 for food.

See Mr. Montenaro with questions or if interested; he will begin the nomination process. Last year the Leadership Academy received over 1,000 nominations from around the country from which they accepted 200 students to attend.
