Our Church Birthday! December 8th, 1849

From Carolyn Clark (FPC historian) -- "I find it humbling that on Dec. 8, 1849, First Presbyterian became the first organized church in Stillwater in the the newly created territory of Minnesota. Even before Minnesota became the 32nd state in the union in  1858, we were a "church." We are now in our 168th year as a congregation! We are thankful for all those who came before us and we ask God's continuing guidance as we seek to serve and make this world a better place."

End-of-Year Giving & Stewardship

Thank you for your generous giving throughout the year to support our church's ministries and mission! Because of you, we are able make a difference in people's lives in this community and around the world.

Please take some time this month to make sure your annual pledge is up to date. As a reminder, donations you wish to be listed on your 2017 end-of-year giving statement must be received (or postmarked) by Dec. 31, 2017.

Our annual stewardship campaign will take place over four weeks in January, culminating with commitment Sunday on January 28.  We will gladly accept pre-paid pledges now for 2018.

Some givers choose to make year-end donations, stock transfers, or IRA distributions for tax purposes.  We encourage you to consult a tax professional for advice about planning.  We are glad to provide instructions and the FPC account number for transfers.

Legacy Gifts: The next time you update your will, please consider including First Presbyterian Church in your estate plans.  No matter how small or how large, you can leave a legacy of faith to continue supporting FPC as we reach out to a hurting world.

Peace and Justice:
We Are Living Gifts!

Giving lives are living gifts!
When we give without thought of receiving, our gift becomes a living gift to others. That gift can heal, bring food, provide shelter and create hope.

Advent and Christmas remind us of the sacrificial gift we received through the love of Jesus Christ. That love calls us to be sacrificial givers, to be living gifts to others.

This Christmas season gives us two opportunities to become living gifts. The first is to remember and actively participate in Human Rights Day. The second is to make a contribution to the Christmas Joy Offering.

Human Rights Day was a major achievement of the United Nations on December 10, 1948. It was established to respect and protect the rights of all people. So, on December 10th, think of a person or group you have trouble accepting and consider ways that will challenge you to respect and protect them. You can become a living gift to them.

The second opportunity is to make a significant contribution to the Christmas Joy Offering. This fund provides financial support to current and former church workers whose incomes fall short of subsistence levels. The fund is also used to allow students to attend Presbyterian related ethnic colleges and schools. With the money you give, some family or student will receive new hope and justice. Give, and it will become a living gift in the lives of others!

Are you a student in middle school or high school?
You could be a PowerUp Student Ambassador!

PowerUp and BearPower want to hear your creative ideas, and help make them happen with the PowerUp Student Ambassadors Program!

Students in middle and high school are invited to design a project that helps make better eating and physical activity easy and fun in our schools and community. When you become a Student Ambassador you will get support for supplies to make your project happen AND showcase your best ideas to create community health.

This program will help them develop leadership, collaboration, time-management skills and many other qualities that will look impressive on a resume or college application. It is a great way to be involved in the community and make a difference locally! For examples and guidelines or to apply visit www.powerup4kids.org/studentambassador.
