Active Shooter Training Resource
Over the past year, the emergency managers of
The Boston Consortium for Higher Education (The Boston Consortium) collaborated to produce a new active shooter training video that would address the specific needs of higher education. At the beginning of the project, The Boston Consortium members agreed to make the video available for free to any institution of higher education that would be interested in using it for their community. The video was specifically designed to be used by any college or university campus, with no identifying locations, logos, or talking heads other than at the beginning and end of the video. A
copy of the video branded by Boston College is now available.
Comprised of 17 Boston-area colleges and universities, The Boston Consortium creates a collaborative environment among member institutions for the development and practical implementation of cost saving and quality improvement ideas. Their communities of practice serve as a forum for discussion, support, information sharing, and problem solving among peers.

The copy you receive will be unbranded, allowing your institution to apply its own brand to the opening and closing frames. The emergency managers of The Boston Consortium and Yale University who originally created the script and inspiration for the video ask for acknowledgement in the opening or closing frame.

National Impaired Driving Prevention Month
National Impaired Driving Prevention Month is observed each year in December. Unfortunately, impaired driving is a preventable tragedy that claims nearly 29 lives daily according to the
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). In 2016, 10,497 people died in alcohol-impaired driving crashes, accounting for nearly one-third (28%) of all traffic-related deaths in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly 1.1 million drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or narcotics in 2015.
The NHTSA has developed multiple campaigns to address impaired driving including
Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over,
Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving, and
The Ultimate Party Foul for underage drinking and driving. Each campaign website contains a variety of materials for use by public safety officials or alcohol and drug prevention counselors such as PSAs, social media messaging, tips, checklists, infographics, and more. In addition, information on
drugged and
distracted driving is available on the NHTSA website.

Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) for information on drug-impaired driving and download the report,
Drug Impaired Driving: A Guide for States (PDF). This report, originally issued in 2015, was updated in April 2017. It addresses the latest research, data, laws, and programs to help states tackle the growing problem of impaired driving. The GHSA also provides access to a pre-recorded webinar, infographics, and additional resources.
Emphasize these important steps with your campus community this holiday season to help prevent drunk driving:
- If you will be drinking, do not plan on driving. Plan your safe ride home before you start the party and designate a sober driver ahead of time.
- If you drink, do not drive for any reason. Call a taxi, phone a sober friend or family member, use public transportation, etc. Download NHTSA's SaferRide mobile app that helps you identify your location and call a taxi or friend to pick you up.
- If someone you know has been drinking, do not let that person get behind the wheel. Take their keys and help them arrange a sober ride home.
- If you see an impaired driver on the road, contact local law enforcement. Your actions could help save someone's life.
By working together and raising awareness about the dangers of impaired driving, we can help make our roads safer by educating our campus community members.
