Does your PTA provide money to teachers for their classrooms? Do you require receipts?

If your PTA pays anyone, not just teachers, more than $600 in one calendar year (January - December) that is not documented as a reimbursement accompanied by receipts, the money is considered by the IRS to be income for the recipient.

  • Your PTA would need to report that payment to the recipient (by January 31) and to the IRS (by January 31) on Form 1099-MISC.
  • This includes money to teachers for supplies and other out-of-pocket expenses if you do not require receipts.
  • Be certain to always require receipts -- to make it clear it's a reimbursement, not income.

Receive a Love Letter  from the IRS, FTB or AG

VERY IMPORTANT  - if you receive a letter from a governmental agency - the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Franchise Tax Board (FTB) or Attorney General's Office (AG) - please do not call the governmental agency that sent you the letter.**

Provide  [email protected] , and  [email protected]  with a copy of the letter asap.

These agencies specifically have asked that all help requests start with California State PTA since CAPTA has formed working relationships with the IRS, FTB and AG and can address your PTA-specific questions.

** Also, don't even think about sticking that letter in the back of the binder, covering it with boxes, or sending it to Mars. The IRS, FTB, and AG do not go away and they do not forget. Your council and district are here to help. Take advantage of us.
