Q&A WITH NEW CHAIR SHARON NUNES
Last month, we sat down with Eileen Miskell, Founding Chair of The Falmouth Fund of The Cape Cod Foundation. Now it's time to meet her successor, Sharon Nunes, a fellow Falmouth resident who has been on the Fund's grant review and advisory committees for several years. She's also on the Board of The Cape Cod Foundation.
Sharon talks candidly about the Fund's purpose, the nonprofits who received grants earlier this year, the challenges they face providing critical community services with limited resources, and the top priorities for her team moving forward.

AN ALTERNATIVE WAY TO GIVE
This time of year, practically everyone is thinking about giving. Two of our funders found that the Alternative Gift Market puts a decidedly different spin on gift-giving, fundraising and building awareness for their nonprofit organizations. Volunteers from the GALE Fund and Cape Cod PATH (People Against Trafficking Humans), both funds of The Cape Cod Foundation, were among the 15 participating nonprofit organizations at the Market, held on November 10 and 11 at the Unitarian Church of Barnstable. More than 200 attendees had the opportunity to visit each organization's booth and learn more about their projects, programs and overall mission. They could then donate to any organization in honor of a friend or family member. What a wonderful twist on gift-giving! The GALE Fund received $400 in donations from the event to support their work for Cape Cod's LGBTQ community. Cape Cod PATH received $570 in donations to help raise awareness of and eliminate human trafficking on Cape Cod.
COMEDY FOR THE COMMUNITY RAISED $128,543 FOR NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS
They say that laughter is good for the soul. It's also good for three nonprofit organizations, the recent beneficiaries of this year's Comedy for the Community fundraiser sponsored by the
Rogers & Gray Charitable Foundation
of The Cape Cod Foundation.
The event, held October 12 at Heritage Museum & Gardens in Sandwich, featured a live auction and performances by world-class comedians John Turco and Kevin Flynn, known for smart, sarcastic, satirical material, dead-on impressions, brilliant caricatures and improvisation. Proceeds benefited three organizations serving those with disabilities:
Cape Abilities
,
Community Connections
and
New England Village
. At the event, Rogers & Gray also awarded surprise grant ($1,000 each) to five nonprofits: John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum Foundation, Plymouth Area Coalition for the Homeless, South Shore YMCA, Cape Cod Museum of Art, and the Joe Andruzzi Foundation.
The Rogers & Gray Charitable Foundation was founded in 2006 in honor of the Rogers & Gray Insurance Agency's 100th year.
The
leaders of the company believed they could honor this important milestone by beginning a foundation that would positively impact the safety and well-being of community members.
Since 2010, they have awarded over $120,000 to local
non-profit organizations.
