 Happy Holidays

From The Oliver Foundation Staff
and Teen Advisory Board

Good things do come in small packages, especially calories.  We just finished eating our Thanksgiving meal and now we are on the way to the next feast.

By all means enjoy your holiday meal, but remember the reason for the season is not to gain weight.  Most of us will put on a couple of pounds from Halloween to New Year's Day - but
it's not a given.
  • Serve your holiday meal on small plates.  Keep the high calorie choices off the table.  If you have to get up to get another serving, you may skip it altogether.
  • Make a commitment to exercise for at least 15 minutes every day during the holiday season - walk, dance, jog or yoga - just move.  Once you get started you may find yourself working out much longer.
  • Remember the reason for the season.  Plan dates with your family and friends that aren't focused on eating.  Spend an afternoon shopping, wrapping gifts or volunteering. Start a new family tradition.  If weather permits, go outside and play a game of touch football, take the family dog for a walk, the important part is to bring physical activity into your day.

Healthy Recipe
Summer Brown, Co-event Coordinator
No Bake Pumpkin Oatmeal Energy Bites
Ingredients
  • 1 1/2 to 2 cups dry, uncooked oatmeal
  • 1/2 cup all-natural peanut butter or other nut or sun butter
  • 1/2 cup pumpkin puree
  • 1/4 cup chia seeds
  • 1/4 cup quality honey
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice
  • 1/2 cup mini dark chocolate chips
Instructions
  1. In a medium bowl, add 1 and 1/2 cups oats, peanut butter, pumpkin, chia seeds, honey, vanilla, and cinnamon. Stir to combine well. You want the mixture to be soft but not too sticky. If you pick up a generous spoonful, you should be able to roll it into a ball and only make a minimal mess (it should stick together when rolled but still feel tacky on your hands). Depending on the type of oats you used (old-fashioned or quick oats), you made need to add up to a half-cup more oats and stir until you reach the desired consistency. Again, it's ok if it's a little sticky because the oats will absorb some of the moisture after a little time passes, but unworkable sticky isn't the goal.
  2. When the mixture is workable, add the chocolate chips and stir to combine. Scoop a large spoonful into your hand and roll into balls. Repeat with remaining dough. Keep these in the fridge for up to a week, or in the freezer for much longer.

The Holiday Season

With the Holiday season comes all the great celebrations and feasts with family and friends but it is important for everyone to remember how to lead a healthy and active lifestyle. As the temperature drops, it gets easier for people to stay inside and become inactive. But you don't have to go outside and run around to stay active because there are a number of things you can do inside your own house to help keep your body in shape and healthy. For my family and I, we invested in a home gym that everyone could use instead of having to go to a gym anytime we want to workout. A home gym can be extremely beneficial to people that are involved in athletics and can be used to lift weights, do yoga, or a number of other activities to stay fit. In addition to working off all the calories that will be consumed during the holiday meals, people need to maintain a healthy diet. Pies, cookies, cakes, and all kinds of desserts are a staple of the holiday season and it is ok to indulge yourself every now and then but maybe instead of grabbing that extra slice of apple pie opt for a healthier dessert like Greek yogurt pumpkin bread. You don't have to sacrifice the taste of a traditional holiday dessert to stay healthy.
