Most everyone agrees that safety is important. After working a full day, everyone wants to go home safe. Even though there might be times where some of us feel safety can be annoying and frustrating. Having to do things in specific ways while safe procedures add extra steps and processes to a project. But I can tell you from first-hand experience that safety doesn't hurt, accidents do.

Through personal stories, I will illustrate that we must Adapt and Persevere.
Brad Hurtig grew up as a typical student-athlete in a small town in Northwest Ohio. Only days after finishing his sophomore year of high school, a devastating workplace related accident resulted in the amputation of both of Brad's hands. Through hard work and determination, Brad soon rejoined his high school football team. His senior year, Brad led his team with 111 tackles and earned all-state honors - all while playing with no hands. Now Brad is taking his powerful message of workplace safety to businesses and organizations across the country.

2017 Holiday Food and Funds Drive Continues
Last month's donations totaled $287.00 and 539 lbs. of food - equivalent to 1148 meals! Thank you for your generosity!
Non perishable food items and monetary donations (make checks payable to Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank) will be collected again this month. Every $1 donated equals 4 meals and every 1.2 lbs. of food donated equals 1 meal.

Q: The cold season is around the corner - should we be concerned with carbon monoxide?
A: Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless, toxic gas which interferes with the oxygen-carrying
capacity of blood. CO is non-irritating and can overcome persons without warning. Many people die from CO poisoning, usually while using gasoline powered tools and generators in buildings or semi-enclosed spaces without adequate ventilation.
Effects of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
- Severe carbon monoxide poisoning causes neurological damage, illness, coma and death
Symptoms of CO exposure
- Headaches, dizziness and drowsiness
- Nausea, vomiting, tightness across the chest
Some Sources of Exposure
- Portable generators/generators in buildings
- Concrete cutting saws, compressors
- Power trowels, floor buffers, space heaters
- Welding, gasoline powered pumps
Preventing CO Exposure
- Never use a generator indoors or in enclosed or partially enclosed spaces such as garages, crawl spaces, and basements. Opening windows and doors in an enclosed space may prevent CO buildup.
- Make sure the generator has 3-4 feet of clear space on all sides and above it to ensure adequate ventilation.
- Do not use a generator outdoors if placed near doors, windows or vents which could allow CO to enter and build up in occupied spaces.
- When using space heaters and stoves ensure that they are in good working order to reduce CO buildup, and never use in enclosed spaces or indoors.
- Consider using tools powered by electricity or compressed air, if available.
- If you experience symptoms of CO poisoning get to fresh air right away and seek immediate medical attention.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has a
website for fire safety in the winter. Fire safety is an issue especially around winter holidays. Candles, holiday decorations, winter greens and fireplaces all pose a fire risk. The NFPA Winter Holiday website contains data on the fire risks this time of year as well as safety tips, videos and children's activities all designed to keep you safe during winter.

Prevent the spread of seasonal flu
OSHA's
Seasonal Flu webpage offers information about how to reduce the spread of the flu in workplaces. It provides information on basic precautions that should be used by
employers and
workers in all workplaces, such as frequent hand washing and covering coughs and sneezes with a tissue. OSHA provides additional precautions that should be used in healthcare settings, such as strictly following infection control practices; using gloves, gowns, and other protective equipment to reduce exposures; and encouraging sick workers to stay home.

Grants for Ohio Employers Working with Persons with Developmental Disabilities
BWC is now accepting applications for the Employers Working with Persons with Developmental Disabilities (EWPDD) Grant Program. The EWPDD grant can provide up to $20,000 at a match of 5-to-1 to state-fund private or public employer taxing districts that work with children and/or adults with developmental disabilities. The 5-to-1 matching grant can help employers purchase approved equipment/items. If they prefer, employers can apply for a grant of up to $20,000 without a match for nonviolent de-escalation and/or trauma-informed-care training and nonviolent de-escalation and/or trauma-informed-care-training certification.

December 1, 2017 Deadline To Report 2016 OSHA 300A Information Has Been Extended To December 15, 2017

The reason for this extension is that the database was down for 2 weeks in August and this complies with the 4 month reporting window from when the database was made available.
Additionally in the document - OSHA intends to issue a separate proposal to reconsider, revise, or remove other provisions of the prior final rule and to seek comment on those provisions in that separate proposal. The separate rulemaking will afford OSHA the time necessary to give full reconsideration to substantive issues concerning the May 6, 2016, final rule.

FY 18 Safety Council Rebate Program Requirements
The FY 18 Safety Council Program year began 7/1/17.
For those members who are eligible to participate in BWC's Safety Council Rebate Program this year, the following requirements must be met between 7/1/17 and 6/30/18:
- Enrollment with safety council by 7/31/17.
- Attendance at 10 Safety council meetings/events. At least 8 thru the local safety council. You can get credit for up to two meetings at BWC's safety training courses or other offsite industry-specific training courses./seminars. Certificates must be submitted to safety council no later than 6/30/18.
- CEO attendance at one safety council sponsored meeting.
- Submit semi-annual reports for the 2017 calendar year.
