Be Alert!
by Pete Moenter
34
"Be on guard so that your hearts are not weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life, and that day does not catch you unexpectedly, 35 like a trap. For it will come upon all who live on the face of the whole earth. 36 Be alert at all times, praying that you may have the strength to escape all these things that will take place, and to stand before the Son of Man."

37
Every day he was teaching in the temple, and at night he would go out and spend the night on the Mount of Olives, as it was called. 38 And all the people would get up early in the morning to listen to him in the temple.

--Luke 21:34-38
It is apparent here that Jesus is revealing through his teaching that He is concerned about the spiritual well-being of the disciples. At this point in His ministry, He is telling the disciples that He will come again and that the worries of life could distract them and zap the spiritual and physical strength they need to avoid those life pitfalls. He tells them to pray for the strength that they may be ready to come before Him when He returns.

Are we not faced with some of the same issues today as we prepare for the celebration of Jesus' birth? The tremendous pressure of this season can certainly distract us and we in fact can lose sight of the reason for the season. The birth of Christ is indeed the reason. We should take Jesus' exultation here as a guide to our actions.
Prayer:
Our Heavenly Father, keep us free of the worries of this season. Give us the strength to overcome all the worldly pressures and be ready to welcome the revelation of Jesus' birth. Amen.
