Tree Walk: Trees of Stanford
Saturday, December 9, 10am - 12pm
Join expert arborist Dave Muffly as we explore the rich mosaic of tree species at Stanford University. View a stunning
Quercus nigra and learn about the decade of experimentation with hybrid oaks, which grow alongside mature oaks, both native and otherwise.
This juxtaposition provides a powerful introduction to one of the hottest topics in biosciences today, the question of whether to incorporate climate change adaptivity into our landscape choices. This walk meets at the main entrance of Frost near the Bing Concert Hall, at Stanford University.

The Great Oak Count Launch!

The Great Oak Count pilot was a resounding success!
A big thank you to all our survey leaders and volunteers for coming out to the College Terrace neighborhood for the launch.
With your help we surveyed almost half of the neighborhood, in unexpectedly speedy fashion, and gathered information on 73 native oak trees! Stay tuned for the next neighborhood survey day in the new year.

Tree Planting & Awards Ceremony
Join us to welcome Palo Alto's incoming Mayor with a special ceremonial tree planting, followed by a reception and presentation of the 2018 Canopy Tree Awards.
This year, Canopy is especially proud to honor Dave Dockter, who is retiring after more than two decades serving the City of Palo Alto as Planning Arborist. Dave has shaped and championed the City's urban forest throughout his career, and we look forward to offering a tribute to his outstanding contributions.

Evening with Hope Jahren

Save the date for a special evening with award-winning scientist and author Hope Jahren.
On Saturday, April 7th 2018, Hope Jahren,
author of Lab Girl, will be our keynote speaker for a festive evening in celebration of trees.
We'll delve into her world as a scientist, for an illuminating look at women in science, and of course, trees.
Hope Jahren has been pursuing independent research in paleobiology since 1996, when she completed her Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley, and began teaching and researching. Her research focuses on plants, seeds, and soil.

Meet Our Fall Interns
This fall, we are thrilled to welcome three Teen Urban Foresters (TUFs) and two interns to the Canopy staff.
We are excited to have on-board Urban Forester Intern, Jack Dorsey, who will be leading the TUFs in tree plantings, essential tree care, and surveying oaks. While Aaron Rudolf, Digital Outreach Intern, is supporting Canopy's social media.

Pollution Solution that's Growing on Trees
The
Mountain View Voice
reports that researchers at NASA have found a promising way to clean contaminated sites--with trees!
John L. Freeman, a plant physiologist with Intrinsyx, initiated an experiment in 2013 with a grove of poplar trees at the Middlefield-Ellis-Whisman Superfund site.
What he found was astonishing, "his trees are sucking up about 40,000 gallons of toxic water through their roots and then breaking down the worst contaminants into benign byproducts". This is great news for the over 1,000 Superfund sites found across the United States.
