World Tournament Recap
By Josh Olson
HELLO Everyone, I hope everyone has had a Fun and exciting summer, lots and lots of horseshoes have been flying this summer as usual with Leagues in full swing and tournaments almost every weekend. As you are reading this for some the Summer season is winding down, and for others it is only half over. I didn't get to many tournaments this year, I'm usually good for a few but with my new career choice and after finishing college last Spring I finally am doing something that I Love, and work is going well, and my weekend schedule involves work every-other weekend so my weekends off are few and far between. That's enough about me. I hope EVERYONE that participated at World this year had a fun and exciting time, I know we had a VERY GOOD showing as pitchers from Minnesota. We had 4 CLASS CHAMPIONS Crowned, congratulations !

From The Secretary's Desk
By Ann Hagman; MGSHPA Secretary/Treasurer
Starting last fall, I stepped into the position of Secretary/Treasurer for the MGSHPA. I immediately became busy with renewals and have been working with Bonnie to learn the ropes.
A couple of reminders for clubs: please submit your rosters for renewals ASAP in June, as I need to start preparation for the State Tournament by mid July and please remember to send in $1 per club member, this is to support the junior program. Also, tournament directors should be sending me $1 per entry!
Our State tournament is just around the corner, 8/31-9/3/18. Please verify that the events you list are posted to Natstats; except for Leagues. I will contact the club for your league percentage at the sign up deadline.
You can go here to print an entry form or complete an online entry form
I look forward to seeing people there!
Beginning October 1st, membership cards will be available for 2019. With recent rules changes, there are now three options for new members: Trial, Provisional and Full membership. Current and returning members can sign up for renewal of full membership. An updated renewal/sign-up will be posted before Oct 1st.
Thank you,
|
From the President
Rick Wright
Hey Everyone
First of all, I would like to welcome back all the pitchers and congratulate all the World Tournament winners from Florence, South Carolina. I did not pitch in the World tournament this year but my wife and I did make the drive down to see our very own Jerry LaBrosse get inducted into the NHPA Hall of Fame. Sara Otto gave an awesome speech about Jerry and all his accomplishments and hard work he has done for both the State of MN and for the NHPA. All I kept thinking after listening to the long list of accomplishments is just how very lucky we are to have Jerry as one of our own. Congratulations Jerry, it is a well-deserved honor!
Now that everyone is back home, it is time to think about participating in our MN State Tournament. The deadline is August 1
st. Just a reminder, you must have 3 sanction events to qualify. This can consist of tournaments and or league play. I hope to see a great turnout.
We also have elections for the North and South VP and selecting a city for our 2019/2020 State Tournament, so please plan on attending the Membership meeting on Sunday, Sept 2
nd.
See you on the courts!
Thanks
Rick

I just got back from another world tournament. During the first week we had four class champions Steve Berning in the open men's, Bob Knudtson and Dale Grunkze in the men`s elder divisions and Connie Bachman in a women`s open class, along with several other money winners. Congrats to all whom made the long trip and came home with some hard earned cash. Congratulations to Jerry LaBrosse for his introduction into the NHPA Hall of Fame and to Rob Hagman for receiving the 2018 NHPA Presidential Award. And thank you to Rob and Ann for their Stat service and computer hard work.
Back to the real world, there are still plenty of tournaments to take place the rest of the season so be sure to get your entries in early. Leagues are into the second half of the season and lots of positions are still up for grabs. Don`t forget to enter the State tournament and entering online is pretty easy, I know because I did it and I am computer challenged so if I can do it you can too. Also say a prayer for Patrick Backhaus and send a donation his way to help with the costs of his extensive surgery for a new heart. Ringers galore to all.

Junior News
By April Lynch
Happy Summer! I hope everyone is enjoying their summer with family and friends and of course hope you are having fun throwing some ringers in the many tournaments this summer.
I just got back from North Carolina pitching at the Florence Center in the Women's class. I ended up placing 8th out of 16 women which isn't too shabby even ending up 10% under my average. Although I didn't place in the money or bring home a trophy, I did the best that I could! What I did bring home is the lasting memories with my Horseshoe Family and that tops any prize I could ever receive!
I was very lucky to get to Florence in time to watch the Junior and Cadets play their championship games. Wow those kids were amazing to watch and I felt their love for the sport! I saw some amazing sportsmanship and friendships on the court along with a great level of concentration.
Minnesota had 4 Cadets and 1 Junior compete and they all did a great job!! Cadets were Tyler Condon, Justice Martin, Isaac Rasmussen and Kevin Hagman. Our Junior girl was Brenna Hagman. Although I wasn't able to be there when they played it looks like from the pictures they had a lot of fun and made some new friends. I Love to see the future of this sport enjoying competing and hanging with their friends!
Hope to see many of you at some upcoming tournaments and definitely looking forward to seeing you at the state tournament in Genola!

Congratulations to all who did well at the World Tournament! Due to Al's back surgery, I have not had much of a chance to get out and about to tournaments to visit with everyone. We would like to thank everyone for the support we have received during this time. Al is standing tall and progressing well. We are looking forward to seeing everyone at the state tournament.

From the Statsman
A few things as the STATS-MAN, TOURNAMENT DIRECTORS and LEAGUE DIRECTORS PLEASE make sure you contact Jerry LaBrosse for the Sanction number for all your Club-Only Tournament's and if you are planning on running an Open tournament. I WOULD like to see the Schedule for 2019 Get Done and submitted before Christmas 2018- I think we can make this happen EASILY. One thing that will begin to take place most likely next year is a new membership system, More Details will follow the Spring Membership meeting that always takes place on the Sunday of the State Tournament in the Afternoon following the morning shift, please plan to attend, lots of rule changes and other things will be Discussed, stay tuned for that information.
Bertha Open was a HUGE Success this year, we had a very good showing on all Classes, I did something a little different and something that hasn't been done in Minnesota I bet in many, many years and that was a ALL POINTS Tournament in ALL Classes, Class D, C, B and A all played Point games, for those of you that are unfamiliar, its basically the championship format but for a Open Tournament, All 4 classes were close enough in my opinion to run no-handicap and no shoe limit point games, except for Class D, they played 30 point games or 40 shoes which ever came first. And not to brag, but I had the Highest Paying tournament this year. $100 for 1st place in ALL 4 classes, $75 for 2nd Place in All Classes, $50 for 3rd in All Classes, and I even paid 4th Place in all classes which was $30. We raised enough money in 50/50 to pay for all the membership dues, and even had enough to purchase a Brick for the Hall of Fame in Wentzville MO, the Bertha Horseshoe Club will join many other Minnesota Bricks and Members at the HoF Brick Display which is a must see in my opinion if you haven't seen it, and the Museum is also a must see if you have never been there before, and wouldn't you know it next year Wichita Falls, Texas is straight south of Minnesota and is the Host for the 2019 World tournament, what better excuse to swing by the Hall of Fame Building in Wentzville MO when you are travelling to Wichita Falls for the World Tournament. Results from the Bertha Open and other Tournaments this Summer can be found on the Minnesota Horseshoe website.
Speaking of the Hall of Fame Building in Wentzville MO. There is a Sanction League Team tournament that is very enjoyable to participate in, it's a 3 person team format, you usually pitch 9 40-50 shoe "count-all scoring" games in the weekend, and the tournament is a LOT of Fun, Jerry Smith the NHPA 3rd VP and League Director is the Tournament Director for that Tournament, more information for that tournament can be found on the NHPA Website, or if you have any questions I can also answer some if you are interesting in going, the Dates for that tournament are October 6th and 7th.
That is all from me for now, if you are reading this before the State Tournament, GOOD Luck to all pitchers coming to Genola for the 2018 State Tournament, and I will see you on the Court!
"Please plan to attend the Awards banquet to congratulate these pitchers, and pitchers that are listed on the Top 10 Award and Tournament Attendance Award please plan to attend the Awards Banquet on Sunday September 2nd, please contact me Josh Olson to confirm you are planning on being there to accept your award, and please check with Ann Hagman if you do not already have your Banquet Tickets purchased, congrats to everyone, and we will see you at State and the Banquet
"

The World Tourney is over and what an exciting finish in the Championship classes. Any clubs that had pitchers entered in the World please send in a short write-up along with their stats and photos to your local newspapers.
Also now that most summer leagues are winding down remember to publish the final league standings along with any club photos in your local newspaper as well. Always remember to include your contact information in the article. This may just be all it takes to attract future club pitchers.
See you at state.

Regional Director

The world tournament was another wonderful event, and a very special one for me. I want to thank all of the officers and directors of the NHPA for coordinating and executing another outstanding world tournament! And I also want to thank all of the MN people who attended the banquet, it was great to be together. And congratulations to Rob Hagman for receiving the NHPA Presidential award for 2018 !
**************************************************
The NHPA has kicked off a new free promotion program for clubs all around the country. If you want to promote your club and attract some new inquiries with this fence banner, send your info to me or call me with questions.
The banner costs you nothing, all you have to do is request one !
Here is a note I received from Casey Sluys:
By now quite a few of you have heard about the banner program the NHPA has put into effect. It consists of a 2 foot by 4 foot banner with grommets. (see picture below) This offer is good ONLY if we reach the quantity of 250 banners. It will have your club name on it along with either our Charter website or Charters Facebook page whichever one you prefer? Perhaps your local club has its own Facebook page? We will place the individual club name on the "TOP" of the banner, on the lower portion of the sign, above the NHPA website address, your clubs website information will go there, if the club has one, if not we will leave as is. We will shuffle things around to have both websites listed.
All orders will be held until we reach a quantity of 250. They will then be turned over to the manufacturer and you will be notified that the banners are being printed. Upon receiving that notice, payment will be expected.
Shipping costs will be burdened by the NHPA.
Any Charter ordering multiple banners will have those banners sent to the mailing address provided on the order form. It is not possible to ship these to each individual club and the NHPA will rely on you RD's to distribute these banners.
This is a great way to advertise your club and horseshoe pitching in general, order yours today.
Thank You,
Casey Sluys
What would you like to put on your banner? State website ? Club Website? State FB page? Club FB page? How about a local telephone number, or an reliable email address? Decide before you order.
