Trinity United Methodist Church

August 2018
The Messenger
From the Pastor

When we moved our Worship time to 9:00 a.m. in January 2017, we knew there might need to be other changes down the road. We have accomplished many things in that time, but now, we feel it would benefit our ministry at Trinity to change our time to 9:30 a.m. Many people have found that 9:00 a.m. is just too early to have breakfast and get ready for church, and therefore they are not always able to come to church at all. It also means that the Choir has to rehearse at 8:30 a.m. which makes it even harder for choir members. This time change will happen on Sept. 16. This may mean some other changes at the other churches as well. Morningside will be making some accommodations and Englewood has discussed discontinuing their formal worship service effective September 16. If approved by the Administrative Council, they have talked about meeting in more of a Faith Community format at 10:00 a.m. for a Bible or Book study, prayer and fellowship until the actual closure of the church, no later than December 31. I will still provide their Pastoral Care and help them through this transition.

However, another change that is coming is that our Office Manager, Sue Miller, is retiring September 1. We will be advertising for someone new, but we are going to miss her and finding her replacement will be difficult. Sue has truly been an asset to Trinity and our ministry and made my work so much easier.

Please see all the other opportunities in this newsletter, some fun things are coming up!

Grace and peace,
  Pastor Sandy

NOMADS

I have known about the NOMADS for a number of years and even promoted participating with them at my previous church, but I had never seen them in action before. A group of NOMADS was at Keizer Clear Lake UMC last year, where hookups were set up in their parking lot and permission obtained for the NOMADS to stay there in their RVs. They were invited back to the Open Door Churches and this year a group (4 couples) of NOMADS visited again, staying at KCLUMC, but working at our church July 16-19, moving on to Morningside UMC for three days and then to Las Naciones UMC. While the Nomads were here they:

Painted, including finishing repairs and prep work where needed:
 - the kitchen walls and ceiling;
 - the side hall walls and ceiling;
 - the front hall ceiling;
 - touched up the ceiling in the men's bathroom;
 - the gable ends and trim, and garage doors at the parsonage, including repairs to     the garage gable end;
 - the wheel stops for the parking places on Elma; and
 - the church sign in front.

Trinity UMC paid for our paint and supplies with money designated by the Church Council from the over-subscription for the floors we put in last year.

Potluck

Board Meeting
The next Board meeting will be August 27, at TUMC, at 6:00 p.m.

Open Door Churches Webpage
Go to  opendoorchurches.org  to see information about each of the churches and ways you can be involved.

Open Door Churches July Board Meeting Notes:
  • The Open Door Churches Board meeting was held at First UMC on Monday July 23rd.
  • Pastor Dan Pitney gave an overview of the things happening at First UMC. Coming soon: Claremont Seminary, which will be housed in the bottom floor at MICAH.
  • The All-Church Worship & Celebration event is scheduled for September 9 at Riverfront Park in the amphitheatre. The Message will be given by LeRoy Barber. Continuing to work on the transportation issues.
  • Pastor Wendy Woodworth talked about the New People/New Places for the Open Door Churches that was part of our discussion from the February Planning Retreat. There are three categories that fall under this heading: New Congregation, New Worshiping Community (the center is worship) and New Faith Community (the center is faith, but is not an organized worship experience). Las Naciones falls in the first two categories. It is processing towards a chartered congregation and they worship regularly on Sunday. The Young Adult Ministry is a New Faith Community.
  • A discussion about Communication for the Open Door Churches. The new web page is up and functioning. There are numerous newsletters available online. There are problems for getting the information to those that do not have internet.
  • The budget and Stewardship campaign will be discussed at the next meeting
  • There was a discussion about the worship times, including the too early time at Trinity UMC. Morningside is still struggling with a time for worship if Trinity changes to 9:30 a.m.
  • Englewood said that to help Trinity, they will stop worshiping as a standard worship experience in September. They will instead do a fellowship time that may include a Bible study. They are looking to close by the end of December
  • We need to continue to claim and support Las Naciones and the Young Adult Ministry. Las Naciones needs help with the Thursday evening Service/Dinner. There is also a need for gently used or new clothing for people to wear to work.
  • The Open Door Churches board members from Trinity are Pat Gillespie and Ann Jeffries.                                                     by Ann Jeffries

Inspired: Slaying Giants, Walking on Water and Loving the Bible Again
If the Bible isn't a science book, instruction manual, or position paper, then what is it?  Bestselling author Rachel Held Evans invites readers on a journey of rediscovery as she  explores the magic of the Bible, engaging the old, familiar stories in new ways that honor the past and enlighten the present. Drawing upon recent scholarship and literary analysis, Evans creatively retells our favorite Bible stories, explains their contexts and possible interpretations, and then connects these ancient stories to our present-day ones. She invites readers to fall in love with Scripture all over again without checking their intellect -- or their imaginations -- at the door. [8 weeks / $15]

Our Strangely Warmed Hearts
Bishop Karen Oliveto traces the history of the church's struggle with homosexuality. These are deeply rooted issues based on whether the Scripture is interpreted as a means of grace or as a rule book. These different interpretations have ultimately shaped the church's response. You'll hear first-person accounts from LGBTQ persons who are faithfully serving in a denomination that denies their calls and -- in some cases -- their presence. From their stories you'll learn how coming-out is a deeply spiritual process that has led them to recognize they are, indeed,  authentic, God-created, and graced selves. [10 weeks / $15]

Fear of the Other: No Fear in Love
In this study, William Willimon invites participants to consider the Gospel command to love (and not merely tolerate) those we consider as "Others" among us. Rooted in the faith of Israel and the Christian story and vision, Willimon brings a Wesleyan perspective to bear on what may be the hardest thing for people of faith to do: keeping and loving the Other as Other.  Honoring the biblical mandate to receive Others in their particularity and difference as gifts and mysteries bearing the grace of God, this study also offers a strong critique of the privileged who all too often rush to language of reconciliation and evade the huge inequalities surrounding
conversations and practices dealing with xenophobia and injustice. [6 weeks / $14]

The (Un)Common Good: How the Gospel Brings Hope to a Divided World
Jim Wallis is a strong, evangelical Christian. For over 2 decades he has been a powerful  national voice challenging the evangelical community to remember and reclaim that Jesus  invites us followers to engage in ministries of social justice. This timely and provocative book invites participants to reclaim Jesus's compelling vision of the common good. Wallis contends that this concept impacts not only our politics, but also our personal lives, families, churches, neighborhoods, and world. [9 weeks / $12]

I Am: Reconciling Science and the Creation Stories
Participants will do some in-depth Bible study of the Creation stories in Genesis 1 & 2. Then they will spend 4 weeks watching and reflecting on the movie/documentary "I Am" which  details a man's journey of spiritual discovery. By visiting with great minds around the world in various scientific, psychological, and spiritual disciplines, he slowly discovers that the "be rich and have lots of stuff" American credo is an empty philosophy and that all of life is  intrinsically connected. [6 weeks / $8]

Greater NW Ordinary Revival
August 24-25, Eugene

Ordinary Revival is a new ministry of the Greater Northwest Area innovation team. An event rooted in worship, storytelling and discussions that will take place across the area this summer. At the first gathering in Portland, Dr. Rev. Leroy Barber had approximately 100 people present. That included leaders from local UMC churches as well as new faith and non-denominational communities as well as local community members and business owners. The Ordinary Revival series include worship and celebration, with a lot of music incorporated as well as roundtable discussions. Barber said event organizers are using the PechaKucha program to incorporate individual storytelling into the events as well. Also included in these events are workshops on everything from community organizing to rural church vitality to race and equity.
The next Ordinary Revival will take place Aug. 24-25 at Wesley First UMC in Eugene.

Getting behind.
Pledges and non-pledges continued to be below estimates.  Pledges were 16% below and Non-Pledges were 20% below. I'm not sure if it is the change in Tax contributions, lower than average attendance or changes in individual money needs that are causing the decrease in contributions. Extra effort from everyone can help us continue our Lord's work.
