When you're building a movement to challenge ageism, you need to use all the tools in your toolbox. Encore.org's Encore Prize - Generation to Generation Challenge does just that. Launched in 2017, the prize stimulates, supports and sheds light on innovative U.S. programs engaging older adults to help kids succeed.

 

Chosen from a field of almost 200 applicants, the two winning programs demonstrate the opportunities that open up when organizations engage older adult talent. Each received $50,000 to support its work.

The first winning program is Hire Autism, a program of the Organization for Autism Research, will recruit older mentors to provide job search support for young adults on the autism spectrum. Over five years, the program will expand from its Washington DC-area home base and recruit 500 encore-age advocates to support 5,000 young people. 

The second winning program is  Critical Bridge , from the Office of San Jose,  California Mayor Sam Liccardo, which integrates caring older-adult mentors into  workforce and community-college programs to help underserved young people get  on track, discover new opportunities and change the trajectory of their lives. Within  five years, the program plans to engage 1,000 older volunteer mentors to serve 1,250 youth annually.

The Conference's keynote speaker is Professor Alexander Kalache, former Director of the World Health Organisation's Global Ageing and Life Course Programme. During his thirteen years at WHO he launched the Active Ageing Policy Framework and the global movement on Age-Friendly Cities among many other enduring initiatives.

There is no charge to make a submission and early bird rates to attend the event  are very favourable but the deadline for submission is December 1, 2017.
