Tozier's Turkey Trek - Sunday, November 19
Sunday, November 19, 2017. Registration at 11am – Your quest starts at 12:00pm

Entry fee $4.00 a person or $2.00 a person with a toiletry donation for the Bucksport community Concerns pantry or Pet Supplies for the Bucksport Animal Shelter.

What are we racing for?
Like a traditional scavenger hunt, you’ll meet at the beginning, split into teams and compete against each other. There are 4 hidden Turkey Idols, all within 30 minutes of Bucksport. Teams receive a clue sheet at the start of the race. Each clue will lead you to an idol or other challenge. As teams complete each challenge, which may have them find cool things, solve riddles, take goofy photos and more, they’ll upload their pictures to the Tozier’s Turkey Trek event page on Facebook. If done correctly, each time your team will be entered in the drawing for a turkey fryer. The teams that retrieve the Idols, complete the Idol Picture Challenges and bring them back to the chamber will be awarded a frozen turkey Certificate (Thanks to Tozier’s Family Markets). Limit one TURKEY idol per team.
I want in! When and where do I need to be?
The race officially begins at 12 PM, November 19, 2017 so please arrive at the Bucksport Bay Area Chamber of Commerce office, 52 Main Street, Bucksport at 11 AM. There will be a check-in desk to pay your entry fee and receive your team bibs. Clues will be handed out to the team captains right before the race begins. You only have two hours to complete your quest! Teams will be disqualified if they have not returned to the chamber by 2:00pm.

Based on an early trial in the career of Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall. It follows the young lawyer (Chadwick Boseman) to conservative Connecticut to defend a black chauffeur (Sterling K. Brown) charged with sexual assault and attempted murder of his white socialite employer (Kate Hudson). Muzzled by a segregationist court, Marshall partners with a courageous young Jewish lawyer, Samuel Friedman (Josh Gad). Together they mount the defense in an environment of racism and Anti-Semitism. The high profile case and the partnership with Friedman served as a template for Marshall's creation of the NAACP legal defense fund.

IRS News & Tips
IRS Statement on 2018 Filing Season Start Date
The IRS has not yet announced a date that it will begin accepting individual tax returns for the 2018 tax filing season. At the present time, the IRS is continuing to update its programming and processing systems for 2018. In addition, the IRS continues to closely monitor potential legislation that could affect the 2018 tax season, including a number of “extender” tax provisions that expired at the end of 2016 that could potentially be renewed for tax year 2017 by Congress.

The IRS anticipates it will not be at a point to announce a filing season start date until later in the calendar year. The IRS will continue to work closely with the nation’s tax professionals and software community as preparations continue for the 2018 tax filing season.

Speculation on the Internet that the IRS will begin accepting tax returns on Jan. 22 or after the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday in January is inaccurate and misleading; no such date has been set.

Refund Timing

In addition, the IRS cautions taxpayers from relying on misleading refund charts on the internet that project tax refund dates. Any speculation about refund dates in 2018 is premature. In addition, these refund charts can overlook that many different factors affect the timing of tax refunds, ranging from the accuracy of information on the return to whether a taxpayer files electronically. In addition, the IRS and state revenue departments have increased their security protocols against identity theft and refund fraud, which also can affect the timing of federal and state refunds.

The IRS issues more than nine out of 10 refunds in less than 21 days. However, it’s possible your tax return may require additional review and take longer. Where’s My Refund? has the most up to date information available about your refund. The tool is updated no more than once a day so you don’t need to check more often. If you use a mobile device you can download the IRS2Go app to check your refund status.

E-File coupled with Direct Deposit remains the fastest way for taxpayers to receive their refunds.

Due to law changes first affecting last year’s returns, the IRS cannot issue refunds for tax returns claiming the EITC or ACTC before mid-February. This law requires the IRS to hold the entire refund — even the portion not associated with the EITC or ACTC. However, there is no need to wait to file such returns since the IRS will process them to the point of refund and then begin refund release when permitted by law.

MEMA Economic Recovery Efforts - Business Survey
Maine Emergency Management Agency Economic Recovery Efforts - Business Survey

Surveys must be received by TODAY Thursday, November 9th at 10 am.
Take the Survey HERE and email it in to [email protected]

After last week’s devastating storm, the state is currently trying to calculate both direct and indirect damages from the downed trees and power lines that resulted in more than 400,000 electricity consumers losing power for days, including businesses across the state.

On behalf of the Maine Emergency Management Agency (MEMA), the Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD) is the lead state agency for economic recovery efforts following a major event such as the late October storm. In order to begin that effort and to seek available resources, MEMA must assess the damage and prepare documentation to submit to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) all within 30 days.

To help DECD capture as much information as possible from impacted businesses, we would like you to complete the following survey and e-mail it back to the Department. Completed surveys may be emailed back to DECD at the following address: [email protected]. If you know of businesses still without power, individuals may contact the Department by phone in an effort to complete the form by the deadline.

The form is asking for an estimate of uninsured losses as a direct result of the storm and sustained power outage. According to DECD, the goal is for businesses to be able to access the Small Business Administration’s federal resources to cover those uninsured losses.

For more information, please feel free to contact Deborah Johnson, Director, Office of Community Development (DECD) at (207) 624-9817, fax (207) 287-8070,
or by e-mail: [email protected].

FREE Senior Exercise Class Begins in Bucksport in January
Seniors, Be Safe and Become Stronger through Bone Builders
In collaboration with the Bucksport Area Senior Center, the University of Maine Center on Aging is planning to offer a free senior exercise class beginning in January called Bone Builders through its Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). The class will be held Mondays and Wednesdays from 1-2:30pm.

Osteoporosis is a condition in which bone mineral density decreases, resulting in the bones becoming thin, brittle, and easily fractured. According to the National Institutes of Health, 10 million Americans already have osteoporosis and 34 million more have low bone mass, placing them at increased risk for the disease. The RSVP Bone Builders Osteoporosis Exercise and Prevention Program is an evidence-based program originally developed by researchers at Tufts University who found that adults can improve their strength and fitness at any age. Researchers have demonstrated that this low-impact weight-training exercise program can improve balance, bone density, and muscle strength, and promote increased leisure time physical activity in seniors. These improvements reduce the risk of falls which can have devastating health and financial effects on older adults, in some cases, compromising their ability to live independently.

Bone Builders requires two trained leaders. We are looking for candidates who are 55 years of age or older, with medical clearance, willing to undergo training both in leadership and in conducting osteoporosis education and exercise classes. Once trained, the lay leader will undergo periodic monitoring and a yearly retraining.

Bone Builder classes accommodate 12-15 male and female participants who are 50 years of age and older with stable health (medical clearance is required). Classes run one and a half hours and meet twice weekly for six months or longer.
If you are interested in leading or attending a Bone Builders class in Bucksport, contact Paula Burnett at the UM Center on Aging RSVP at (207) 262-7926 or paula.burnett@ maine.edu .
RSVP Bone Builders receives partial funding from the United Way of Eastern Maine and the Corporation for National and Community Service.
