Northern California Feels Like Home, Again

Having spent the first seven years of her childhood in Vacaville, the Rev. Dr. Pamela Dolan is glad to be back in California, serving as the new rector of St. Martin's, Davis.
Most recently from a suburb near St. Louis, Missouri, called Town and Country, Rev. Pamela has had the opportunity of calling several places home: Micronesia, Hawaii, Connecticut, Washington, New York and Scotland.
As a child, Dolan spent much time back and forth between Hawaii and California, attending a Roman Catholic church during this time. After her first communion, Dolan said she had "a deep, intuitive feeling that (the priesthood) was something (she) wanted to do."
However, Dolan didn't start thinking about what this feeling meant for her until college, especially because the Roman Catholic church does not ordain women.
Dolan attended college at UC Berkeley, continuing the third generation of students in her family to do so, graduating Phi Beta Kappa with high honors and an English degree.
During her time at Berkeley Dolan spent a year abroad at the University of St. Andrew's in Scotland, where she first thought about studying theology.
Following her call, Dolan eventually moved across the country to attend Harvard Divinity School, where she obtained a master's degree in theology.
Around this time, Dolan said she began to realize that she "wouldn't be able to change the Roman Catholic church from the inside, although that was what (she) was trying to do at the time."

The Standing Committee would like to thank everyone who submitted nominations to serve on the Search Committee for the 8th Bishop of our Diocese. Several dozen applications were received and we truly appreciated each and every one of them.
The Standing Committee sought to create a Search Committee composed of "citizens of the diocese" who demonstrate not only the essential skills and considerable time needed to carry out the assigned duties and responsibilities, but who also represent a diverse group of voices including but not limited to location, gender, race, age, of both lay and clergy (including priests and deacons, both working and retired). Also notable is that each deanery will be represented.

Pathways 2018: Early Registration Deadline Is Dec. 15
Are you or someone you know planning on attending Pathways 2018? If so, don't delay; register now! The cost to attend is $450 if you register before Dec. 15, and a $50 deposit is due then as well.

St. Patrick's, Kenwood Reopens After Fires
St. Patrick's, Kenwood, reopened their doors for services on Nov. 5, a little less than a month after the fires began.
The Rev. Karen King, interim priest, attended a community potluck on Nov. 12, in honor of the firefighters who helped save their town. The Press Democrat featured St. Patrick's in their coverage of the event. Here is an excerpt of the story:
"I stand here today because of those firefighters," Rev. Karen King, pastor St. Patrick's, Kenwood, which just reopened the week before for services after suffering fire- and wind-related damage. "Remember when you celebrate your families and your own lives to celebrate the lives of the firefighters - saints among us, who were patient, brave and true."

Save the Date: Nadia Bolz-Weber at Trinity Cathedral
Come see this sleeve tattooed, salty ELCA pastor speak authentic truths to the broken places in our lives, on Feb. 18, 2018 at 7 p.m at Trinity Cathedral, Sacramento.
The Rev. Nadia Bolz-Weber is the founding pastor of House for All Sinners and Saints in Denver, Colorado. Her writings can be found in the Christian Century, The Lutheran Magazine and Patheos.com. Nadia has been featured in The Washington Post, Bitch Magazine, NPR's Morning Edition, More Magazine, The Daily Beast and on CNN.
Nobody really believes she's an ordained pastor in the ELCA. Maybe it's the sleeve tattoos or the fact that she swears like a truck driver. Either way...she's fine with it. Nadia lives in Denver with her family of 4 where she can be found writing bios in the third person, lifting weights and walking her Great Dane, Zacchaeus.

The application process is now open for the new Episcopal Evangelism Grants Program, designed to fund local and regional evangelism efforts in the Episcopal Church. Grants are available for up to $2,000 for an individual congregation. The deadline to apply is Dec. 15; more information is available
