Claflin Gives Back to the Community During Annual Thanksgiving Worship Service

Claflin University hosted its annual Thanksgiving Worship Service and donation of harvest baskets to local residents on Monday, November 20. The baskets were prepared by administrators, faculty, staff and students and contained enough food for local families to prepare a full Thanksgiving meal. Ninety-two families benefited from the evening event.

"We are showing that Claflin cares and demonstrating how much God has blessed us," said President Henry N. Tisdale in the closing remarks to the congregation. "We feel blessed that you have come on campus to celebrate with us. You're presence means a lot to us," he said to the visiting families.

Tisdale also reminded the congregation of the purpose of this time of year. "Let's remember that this is a season of giving and this it is better to give than receive," Tisdale said.

The Reverend James Cromartie, pastor of Olive Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Orangeburg, was the guest speaker and also set the tone for the evening. His message titled "Be Thankful" challenged listeners to give thanks in all circumstances. "Even though things are continuously happening, the Bible says to rejoice," he said.

The program also included music by Claflin's D.R.E.A.M. Gospel Choir, a congregational hymn selection and scripture reading.  The program is hosted each year by Claflin University's Division of Student Development and Services prior to the Thanksgiving holiday.

Alumni Notes
Mercy Chikowore, '06, recently published a story in the Huffington Post titled Claflin University: The Best HBCU Tucked Away On The Hilltop High. Chikowore's piece gave readers a glance of her Claflin experience. "When my confidence is rusty, I think about my journey to now, which started on the hilltop high, I polish it and put it back up on a mantle because Claflin taught me. It's that confidence that helped us leave the warmth of Orangeburg, S.C. and walk into the cold corporate world. It's that confidence that's helped us become doctors, authors, teachers, therapists, nurses, counselors, journalists, publicists and music artists. It's that confidence that inspires us to sing Claflin's praises and inspires students to apply to our alma mater," she said. Chikowore is the c ommunications manager for the Washington Area Women's Foundation and executive director for ColorComm: Women of Color in Communications.

On Saturday, November 4,  Rev. Albert Shuler, '74, and Dr. Jimmie Blake Shuler, '74, celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary at a luncheon at Epworth United Methodist Church in Durham, N.C.
