On the first anniversary of the
ARCH system, I am providing you with some reading material for this long holiday weekend. While the topic covered below is not uplifting, it is a topic with which we should all be aware.
I am talking about the possibility of human annihilation; certainly not a pleasant thought for anyone
. In covering this topic, I am providing three sources of information about the many untoward effects of our planet's industrial civilization.
Some "big picture" scientists believe that the time we humans have left on planet Earth is far less than 200 years, and while they may be right, I am just not ready to accept it. I feel that our best chance to prevent human annihilation is by quickly raising the global awareness of the many unsustainable situations that we are all facing. That is what I am trying to do today.
This is not a typical BSB, because it is anything but "bite-sized." Rather, it's an introduction to
three sources that you may wish to review during this holiday. Presented below are two articles and one 23-minute video.
As I am only providing brief excerpts from the two articles in this BSB, I expect that you will want to carefully read them yourself at your leisure.
First Source.
11-20-17 opinion piece by
Benjamin Y. Fong, a faculty fellow at Barrett, the Honors College at Arizona State University, the author of "Death and Mastery: Psychoanalytic Drive Theory and the Subject of Late Capitalism," and an editor at Damage Magazine.
The title of
his piece in The New York Times
is:
"The Climate Crisis? It's Capitalism, Stupid."
An excerpt: "The real culprit of the climate crisis is not any particular form of consumption, production or regulation but rather the very
way
in which we globally produce, which is for profit rather than for sustainability."
"So long as this order is in place, the crisis will continue and, given its progressive nature, worsen. This is a hard fact to confront. But averting our eyes from a seemingly intractable problem does not make it any less a problem. It should be stated plainly: It's
capitalism
that is at fault."
This piece reminded me of the following slide that I use in my presentations to convey the need for completely overhauling how the global economy functions. Era of 'Biological Annihilation' Is Underway, Scientists Warn
An excerpt. "From the common barn swallow to the exotic giraffe, thousands of animal species are in precipitous decline, a sign that an irreversible era of mass extinction is underway, new research finds."
"
The study, published Monday in
the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, calls the current decline in animal populations a "global epidemic" and part of the "ongoing
sixth mass extinction" caused in large measure by human destruction of animal habitats. The previous five extinctions were caused by natural phenomena."

Third Source.
The video below was published by Dr. Guy McPherson yesterday. In 23 minutes, he delivers a compelling overview of the Sixth Mass Extinction, a process that is primarily being driven by what he describes as the "heat engine" known as industrial civilization.
McPherson seems to be deeply saddened by the apparent hopelessness of his findings, yet feels that all humans have a right to know what is happening to their habitat. He is also puzzled and disappointed about the fact that our scientific, governmental and news organizations have not shared much of this info with the public.
This is the very best video ever from Dr. McPherson.

The Bottom Line.
While I choose not to give up hope for the future of humanity, I respect the quality of McPherson's research and appreciate his sincerity as he delivers his most troubling conclusions.
I share this material with you today because I agree with this statement by David Wallace-Wells that accompanied his "Uninhabitable Earth" article published in July 2017 in the New York Magazine:
"My feeling was, and is, if there's a one percent chance that we've set off a chain reaction that could end the human race, then that should be something that the public knows and thinks about."
